McCoy And Gephard Celebrate Spring
With A Contest In Rough And Ready ©
ROUGH & READY 1861
Rough & Ready celebrated the
¢oming of Spring with a wood
sawyers contest. McCoy vs,
Gephard, Crowds gathered for
the first time since the long winter
and the betting was high.
The combatants were strong,
healthy, and confident. They
joked as they worked, kidding
each other and. the betters. For
the first few hours the rising piles
were about equal, They were
averaging a cord per hour.
Gephard felt he wasn't really ~
trying yet; he felt himself getting
stronger and stronger, The
rhythmn of the ax excited him so
when he grew hungry at noon he
stopped for dinner. He felt his
energy would double after he'd
eaten.’ McCoy worked on at the
same pace,
After eating, Gephard walked
out among the crowd waiting for
his dinnertosettle. He explained
to them how important a good
meal was to him and that he
would return to work with so much
energy McCoy would concede
long before the day was out. For
the more serious cutting of the
afternoonhe-chose three of his
friends to help him. One used
bacon to grease the blade of his
saw, the second wiped his brow

steps are not taken now to pro-~

"During August, 86,630 families were refused the opportunity
to camp-in State parks because
the beach and park facilities were

most important, was the bottle

When the four men began to

see. The bacon greaser worked
swiftly over the blade when his
captain changed to an ax. The
sweat swabber came in at intervals that seemed to be getting
closer together, And the bottle
holder was a marvel,
McCoy worked on and on,
‘But Gephard hadn't let his
