FPATIINGS Ss secu McCoy And Gephard Celebrate Spring With A Contest In Rough And Ready © ROUGH & READY 1861 Rough & Ready celebrated the ¢oming of Spring with a wood sawyers contest. McCoy vs, Gephard, Crowds gathered for the first time since the long winter and the betting was high. The combatants were strong, healthy, and confident. They joked as they worked, kidding each other and. the betters. For the first few hours the rising piles were about equal, They were averaging a cord per hour. Gephard felt he wasn't really ~ trying yet; he felt himself getting stronger and stronger, The rhythmn of the ax excited him so when he grew hungry at noon he stopped for dinner. He felt his energy would double after he'd eaten.’ McCoy worked on at the same pace, After eating, Gephard walked out among the crowd waiting for his dinnertosettle. He explained to them how important a good meal was to him and that he would return to work with so much energy McCoy would concede long before the day was out. The California Parent Teachers Association, ‘representing some 1, 900, 000 Californians, endorsed Proposition One at its state convention. "Preservation of natural areas near urban centers is a problem which we must deal with today or not at all," Mrs. Edwards said. “Skyrocketing land prices and unavailability of land will put an end to all pretenses of providing outdoor recreation areas for California's parents and children if steps are not taken now to pro-~ vide for the future. Scheduled to start at noon, the whoppers will be told and with apanel of judges to determine which is the furtherest from the truth, the winner will receive a heautiful trophy and the runnerups will receive other prizes. Rules of the contest call for the bull-yarn to be on the Mother Lode country, all ages eligible and from the four corners of the earth. Part of the day's program will be an antique auction.
