NEVADA CITY ---A scholarship of $150 has been given
Gil Thornally to aid in his
tuition at the San Francisco
Art Institute by the Nevada
City Art Association and the
local Art Rental Gallery.
Thornally graduated from
Nevada Union High School
twoyears ago and was recognized by the faculty asa gifted art student.
With the help of the scholarship, he has been able to
enroll in the art school this
year and writes, “I'm now

Of the scholarship, $115
was collected years ago as
membership fees for an organization which was to be
known as the Nevada County
Art and Garden Society. It
was to have been an organization made up of various
groups associated with the
arts---artists, dramatists,
garden clubs, photographers
and weavers,
The organization did not
take hold, the Nevada City
Art Association being the
most active surviving group,
and the art association was
given custody of the funds,
association president Helen
Bontecou said.
The Art Rental Gallery,
little more than six months
old, addedto the scholarship
to bring it to the $150 figure.
} Both the association and
rental gallery aspire to contributing to art scholarships

marks the third anniversary of
California's Consumer Counsel program,
A new idea in California
state government, the program is also unique in the

While a few states (including California) have special

with frauds against consumers, only California has
a Consumer Counsel placed
at the top level of government, in the Governor's office.
California's Consumer
Counsel post was created by
an act of the Legislature at
