Fire Control Officer John Bigley, of the Camptonville District
ofthe U.S. Forest Service, urges
that all residents check their flues
before winter, as a fire prevention measure.
Bigley hopes this will prevent
any more house fires such as the
one which burned the old Zerga
home in Oak Valley on Sunday
night, Sept. 29. The fire was
not seen by anyone. Bill Oaks,
who occupied the home, managed to get out of the burning
building but could not call anyone, of course. And he could not
walktoa neighbors as both of his
feet and his right.leg were burned.
Qaks waited there until Monday,
morning for help. The U.S. Forest
Service was called but all they
could dowas "“mopup” and Bigley
took BillOaksto the County Hospital in Nevada City, Oaks stated
that the fire started inthe vicinity
of the kitchen cook stove.
