Gives Backing To FFA Program
When a state's biggest business
isagriculture, its plenty depends
on a continuing crop of young
farmers.
And since California is leading
farm state in the nation, future
farmers are more vital to its continued welfare than oranges or oil
wells.
For nearly a dozen years -~
through a program producing public recognition and honor for
young people who literally hold
the future of the golden state at
the tip of a plow -Wells Fargo
Bank has been cultivating excellence among California's future
farmers.
Nineteen sixty-four will bring
the 12th birthday of acompetition
sponsored by the bank in cooperation with the Future Farmers of
America, the State Bureau of Agricultural Education, the California Bankers Association, and
high schools throughout northern
California.
The program has produced a
bumper bunch of enthusiastic ,
responsible, and hard-working
youngsters whose lives are dedicated to agriculture. In participating communities, the quality
of agriculture itself has improved.
Since 1952 when Wells Fargo
Bank -then the American Trust
Com pany beforea merger and
name change -began its part in
the program, an average of 4,000
students per year have competed.
So enthusiastic has been response
to what began as an experiment,
other-banks have followed suit.
By making available organization
plans, forms, and advice, Wells
Fargotook the lead in encourag~
ing fellow banks to participate.
The program grew to cover all of
California.
Contestants learn by doing.
They must be high school students
enrolled in vocational a griculture who take on an agricultural
project. (These requirements are
also requisite to membership in
the Future Farmers of America.)
Choice of project canrun _,
through the varied fields of farming --farmcrops to cattle, from
poultry to plums, from farm machinery to berries. Undertaken in
the freshman year, projects often
bloom by graduation into going
concerns the student can expand
into full-time farming activities.
Contestants first-take part in
inter-school competition. Winners go on to sectional competition with winners from other
schools. Those who come out on
top are guests at a banquet hosted
by the bank at which they are
awarded a gold or silver certificate. Based on a Danish method:
of grading, certificates indicate
whether the student is in the top
