Dr. W. D. Widmeyer was born in a log house in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia on July 19, 1884. He has visited every state in the Union and has preached or lectured in 45 of them. ; He has circled the world three times, twice by air and once by water, traveling in some 30 countries. With all the world to choose rom he and Mrs. Widmeyer iave chosen to divide their time etween their home in Pasadena i a vacation home in Chicago rain, ilis early family history is fascinating. His birthplace was named for Governor Berkeley of Virginia. When George Washington was a young man he surveyed the area and Governor Berkeley gave him 5,000 acres as his pay. Some of Dr. Widmeyer’s relatives have deeds with the signatures of Gov. Berkeley and George Washington signed on Sheep Skin with a date of 1799. Dr. Widmeyer was educated in the schools of West Virginia and converted at 13. He dedicated his life to God at 17 and entered God’s Bible School in Cincinnati' where he completed a two year course. He was then ordained on June 4, 1902. While evangelizing in Kansas in 1905 he accepted an offer to teach in the bible school at Hutchinson, Kansas. This school * later became Bresee College. The doctor spent 40 years teaching in schools associated with his denomination, was a pastor some eight years and evangelized the same number of years. In 1952 he went to Taiwan to each in a Bible Seminary and spent nine years on the Mission field, teaching for seven of them in mission schools. He had to do his teaching through an interpreter. Aside from other activities Dr. Widmeyer is the composer of more than 400 Gospel hymns, the most famous being ‘‘Come and Dine’ .and ‘In the New Jerusalem’’. These two have been translated in 16 different languages and sung around the world. Dr. Widmeyer is in a fair state of health, having passed his 89th birthday in July. He. still preaches and participated in religious meetings. He is the oldest ordained minister in the
Church of the Nazarene. He is the father of two children, has four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Several foundations to furnish scholarships to foreign students and a Gospel Literature Revolving Fund to provide He has preached in London, New York, Osaka, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Sydney and many of. the world’s largest cities. On one trip from Tokyo to the U.S.A. via the Indian Ocean he was on a freighter for 13 weeks. Dr. Widmeyer married Maud F. Logue and they lived together for 57 years and 10 months. Then he married Dorothy S. Griffith and they are now in their eighth year of married life. Placer Okays land change The Placer County Board of Supervisors has amended an ordinance requiring land parcels of more than 10 acres for placing mobile homes in the unclassified and farm zones of the county The board, by a 3 to 2 vote, made it a requirement that a mobile home is not allowed on a 10-acre parcel if there is “a conventional home already on the site. The supervisors explained that in an area where there is a one-acre minimum building zone it would require at least 11 acres for a mobile home and a conventional structure. The supervisors also amended the ordinance whereby leased land cannot be considered as part of the 10-acre minimum requirement. Paul Bradley assigned Lowry AFB SAN ANTONIO — Airman Paul K. Bradley, son of Mrs. Louise Bradley of 112 Townsend, Grass Valley, has been assigned to Lowry AFB, Colo., after completing Air Forcé basic training. During his six weeks at the Air Training Command’s Lackland AFB, Tex., he studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special instruction in human relations. The airman has been assigned to the Technical Training Center at Lowry for _ specialized training in the armament systems field. Airman Bradley is a 1973 graduate of Nevada Union High DR.
