nature information
New. environmental _information on_ picture-text
plaques for easy reading will
give Interstate 80 travelers
interesting facts about the
geological and botanical history
of the old Gold Run mines, 24
miles northeast of Auburn.
Two roadside rests located in
the mine sites are in use along
the freeway. The tertiary river
bed from which gold was taken
is probably 50 million years old.
The ‘‘Roadside Ecological
Viewing Area’ is in the westbound roadside rest. A gravel
path leads visitors from the
parking area to several viewing
stations where the new signs
explain history of gold mining,
how it was done and the
botanical make-up in this section of the Sierra.
The permanent displays are
mounted near an authentic
‘“‘monitor’’ used in the 1800’s to
shoot streams of water into goldbearing river banks. A sluice
box has also been placed there.
Both of these authentic
restorations were provided by
the Placer County Historical
Society.
At one time there were 45
hydraulic mines operating
within a one-and-a-half-mile
radius of the Gold Run roadside
rest.
The Gold Run rest area is one
of 20 in the state chosen as a
point of interest because of
unusual wildlife or geologic
features.
Funds for the program come
from an allocation from. environmental license plate sales.

scores win over Sierra
WEED — Quarterback Randy
Cantrell threw a touchdown pass
and ran for two other scores
Saturday as College of the
Siskiyous ran over Sierra
College 36-7 in the Golden Valley
Conference opener for both
schools.
Wolverine quarterback Fred
Besana missed some of the
game due to illness and backup
man Steve Hall was only able to
connect on one scoring strike, a
15-yarder to Eric Murphy to
open the second period.
The Eagles meanwhile
showed an explosive offense as
they picked up 383 total yards,
248 on the ground and 135
through the air. The Wolves on
the other hand had only 23 yards
rushing but did manage to pick
up 193 by the passing route for a
total of 216.
Siskiyous started fast, picking
up two first quarter scores.
Dave Spence ran one over from
15-yards out and Cantrell had
the other, a six yard gallop. The
Eagles added a field goal in the
second quarter of 29-yards by
Tom Taylor to give the hosts a
16-7 halftime edge.
Cantrell and Spence added
third period scores and Cantrell
Taylor on an 18-yard aerial in
the final period to put the game
on ice.
The Wolverines, now 0-4 and 01 in league play nust now face
powerful Shasta Saturday in a
must win game if they are to
have any hopes of bringing the
GVC crown to Rocklin. The
contest is a home game for
Sierra starting at 1 p.m. ’
