2 The Nevada County Nugget Wed., Oct. 10,1973 Notes Off The Cuff . The Nugget is well read, but not always “very carefully read’’ of that we’ve had some laugh-provoking proof lately. In the issue for Sept. 26, page five was. a reproduction of a page from the issue of Oct. 8, 1953. One advertisement therein caused a chain reaction among our readers. . .quite a number of whom called the office, or Youth Club sponsored by Methodists An interdenominational “Youth Club’’ will be sponsored by the United Methodist Church of Grass Valley for fourth through eighth grade sutdents. The establishment advertising modestly was the now sometime defunct ‘Saddle and Sirloin’’ chuck-wagon cafe in Nevada City. Their ad noted that they were serving Prime Rib, Baked Ham and Chicken Supreme‘‘all you can eat” for $2.10 for adult portions and half that much for the child’s plate. I’ve lost count of persons wanting to know the address of that cafe; an item not included in the advertising copy. But, at those prices who wouldn’t want to know? What a difference 20 years can make! It’s “Fall Color’ time in Nevada County again. . what a grand time it is. Just take aride up Highway 20, over Highway 49 towards North San Juan or the Downieville area, or most anyplace elsé.in our wonderful . if you want to revel in some utterly spectacular sights. But remember to take your camera along: . loaded with color film, or you’ll be awfully sorry later on. It’s well worth using a few gallons of precious
gasoline for a feast for the eyes and the soul. I received a letter from a correspondent of many years who lives way down under.. .in New Zealand. . .this week. It is “Spring, beautiful Spring” down there now and the tourists are popping up all over that most amazing land. My friend-s-the head receptionist at a large resort hotel; and she says that, interestingly enough, Japanese visitors outnumber the Americans this year by about five to one. ‘‘And they (Japanese) seem to have unlimi ted funds to spend and everyone of them has from one to three expensive cameras for various kinds of photographic work.’’ Her position brings her into first contact with many of the arrivals every day. She admits to long hours on the job, but says: ‘‘I wouldn’t trade jobs with anyone else for twice the pay. . .you can’t imagine the wonderful material I’m accumulating for that book I’m going to write someday!”’ Rug cleaners must have had a field day right after the recent resurfacing job on Broad Street in Nevada City. Did you notice how many children and dogs paddled about in the fresh oil before the rollers went to work? I felt sorry for one little boy who lost his ice cream cone in the oily mess. He stood there, riveted to the spot for a couple of minutes and then the tears came. One of the workmen nearby walked over and spoke to him, then handed the little chap a coin. Soon another cone was being quickly eaten. . .up on the sidewalk well away from the road work. Nice gesture and I’m sure the little boy will remember that man for a long time to come. .and .
