Nam ports of Saigon
Djakarta, Dalat, Can Tho,
Phung-Hiep, Hue, Nha-Trang and many others.
At these ports medical
teams went ashore to treat
and vaccinate hundreds of
thousands of human beings,
some of whom had never seen
a doctor. Those requiring
surgical treatment were taken
aboard the Hope.
"Everyone in Indonesia is
sick,” Miss Hefelfinger said.
"Their diet is mainly fruit
and rice."
Sanitation is practically
non-existent and thousands
are afflicted with huge tumors, she reported.
More than 250,000 people
were inoculated and many
thousands more underwent
major surgery. A mass chest
X-ray program was carried
on by the ships personnel and
trained native assistants.
The cruise of the SS Hope
was designed as a training
mission but in many areas
nurses and doctors were so
scarce there was no time for
training. On one of the islands there was one doctor
to care for the medical needs
of the 109,000 population,
Miss Hefelfinger said,
Disease wasn't the only enemy encountered. Communist propaganda lies abou:
the purpose of the Hope's
Mission were prevalent. The
natives weretold they would
be used for medical "experiments” and that the treatment would not be free.
Despite the Communist
warnings, and despite the
lack of communicationbetween the islands on the tour,
thousands of natives were
waiting when the SS Hope
arrived,
Miss Hefelfinger was the
only woman member of a
field medical team which
moved to within 45 miles
of the Red border where a
3000 bed hospital was being
operated by an American
public health nurse and

Since herreturn, Miss
Hefelfinger, daughter of Isabel Hefelfinger, a Nevada

and service clubs of the area, .
She has told many stories of
