He has also been president of the Hi 4-H club. He has two active hobbies, photography and ham radio. He is a 1961 graduate of Nevada Union High School andiscurrently attending Sierra Junior College. Nam ports of Saigon Djakarta, Dalat, Can Tho, Phung-Hiep, Hue, Nha-Trang and many others. At these ports medical teams went ashore to treat and vaccinate hundreds of thousands of human beings, some of whom had never seen a doctor. Those requiring surgical treatment were taken aboard the Hope. "Everyone in Indonesia is sick,” Miss Hefelfinger said. "Their diet is mainly fruit and rice." Sanitation is practically non-existent and thousands are afflicted with huge tumors, she reported. More than 250,000 people were inoculated and many thousands more underwent major surgery. A mass chest X-ray program was carried on by the ships personnel and trained native assistants. The cruise of the SS Hope was designed as a training mission but in many areas nurses and doctors were so scarce there was no time for training. On one of the islands there was one doctor to care for the medical needs of the 109,000 population, Miss Hefelfinger said, Disease wasn't the only enemy encountered. Communist propaganda lies abou: the purpose of the Hope's Mission were prevalent. The natives weretold they would be used for medical "experiments” and that the treatment would not be free.
