_ CS Re In reviewing the files of the Nevada CountyNugget we note that a great deal of time and efforts of previous editors was devoted to the "Editorial" section of your newspaper. This newspaper is a vital part of your community, and its past concern, editorially, voicing the pros and consofits activities does, indeed, deserve commendation for fulfilling its obligation to its readers and the community it serves. However, these opinions, suggestions and this advice came , mostly from’ editors of your newspaper who had lived in your fine community for quite some time, most of them were not newcomers into your.life. Most of them were well-versed on the needs, faults and political and civic pulse of the area, We would, indeed, be assuming an air of arrogance, should we immediately,.as a stranger to your community, take it to task, or praise or back any particular segment of your local society, as a complete newcomer, we presently do not think it is any of our immediate business, However, there are certain immediate bonds .and ethics required of us on assuming this most responsible post which we most ; humbly acknowledge. This is where one separates the "'men from -the boys" in thé noble: profession of journalism, and there are situations, stranger or not; which we will voice our opinion to the utmost within these columns, _..\ ==-We believe most ‘sincerely in the Golden Rule, the Ten Commandments, the protection of the innocent and the damnation of the corrupt. ---We believe that no one is guilty of a crime until his peers have. legally, judged him so, 3 “2° *~"seWe believe, strongly, that law enforcement agencies should :+; excercise their authority only by due process and that they, in -.° turn, -deserve the’ backing and gratitude of the entire citizenry for zs their surveillance and protection from those who disregard the law, ‘-2 We do not believe in "'Trial By Press." ., **We believe in the Bill of Rights, but.do not believe that it was written to protect fanatic groups who laugh at our laws and who -. Slay and injure their brothers and cause endless destruction to other _ People’s property. We have no time for fanatics of any sort ‘political, religious or.any other. : . “We believe that the office of the President of the United States is a most dignified and respected one, and that whoever holds that office either Republican or Democrat, now or in the is there by the will'of the majority. While we respect the constituitional rights’ and privileges of the "loyal opposition," to criticize and oppose,.and in many instances reject fis programs or ideas, we will not stand for any vulgar insults upon his person or his family. And this opinion holds fast for any person elected to any government _ office, town, city, state or national, ---Regarding the publication of ‘Letters to the Editor"-While we believe that noone is above reproach, including ourselves, and that the voice of the people must be recognized and heard, we will publish such letters, as space permits, However, as we stated before, we believe in honest criticism, suggestions or advice which should be constructive, We will not publish letters which are vulgar or insult the dignity of anyone in public office, or any law-abidthg . Citizen of this community, nor will we be the medium to pursue any private, personal argument, ‘ --We believe that a 24-hour watch should be posted over our public school system to insure its safety from the possibility of its becoming federalized, We believe inthe rights of the state over --, the federal government to make final decisions regarding the books, “+ policies and rules.concerning public schools, We also profess that “* all of our children will notbecome doctors, lawyers or engineers, <e that part of our éducational system should be geared to political ~ science and also the vocational arts, as this country will always need barbers, mechanics, bookeepers, agriculturists and others who are : ‘ not interested in the’finer arts, For all these things, and many others, we will fight with all we have at hand, : 5 “Inthe meantime, we like ithere and we are grateful for the most
friendly reception afforded us by the citizens and businessmen of hs your fine community, Thank you! We will exhert every effort to fulfill the demanding «“ ideals that the position of editor of your newspaper entails. --P,S;---We don't believe hm all teen-agers are bad, and maintain that television and teachers are not babysitters and the "law -of the. shingle’ should prevail, setting many a wayward youth on the right path, NEWSPAPERS}... sc WEEK. If it does not thrive, by community participation and merchant's advertising, outsiders are inclined to» look onthe-town as»yndesirable to live in, and so move on to other areas, = : One of our greatest patriots, Thomas Jefferson, said that if he had to have government without newspapers or newspapers without government, he would take the newspaper, because through them he felt that the State could be run with a fair success, If some of us appreciated more fully, the value of our newsPapers, we would make a great effort to see that they get the news and advertising and so become successful, Modern society cannot get along with newspapers anymore than it can without schools and churches, or our competitors, radio and television, “KITTEN ON THE KEYS” — This white, bobtailed kitten has been an uninvitedguestat the Nugget office for the past week, and was nearly adopted as a permanent mascot. However, Sunday, ayoung lady, noticing the cat in our office claimed the kitten as hers and took it home. ; me (Nuggetphoto)
