The popular cruiser, City of Honolulu, was gutted by a fire én
MidPacific and abandonedby the 217 souls aboard her, The vessel
was expected to sink at any moment. She was homeward bound
from Honolulu and was 670 miles southwest off Hawaii and 670
* miles southeast of her San Pedro port when the fire broke out.
Pending an investigation by the Maritime Boards no cause was
given for the conflagration which destroyed the vessel.

Valley, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a family
reunion in the home of one of their daughters, Mrs. Joseph

Traveling at a greater speed than any human being ever before
attained, Lieut. R. L, Maughan, U. S. Army pilot, set a new airplane speed record by covering a 100 kilometer course at the
rate of 248.5 miles per hour. The record was made at the
National Air Races in Michigan. His machine was a Curtiss
Army Biplane, powered by a Curtiss 400 HP motor.

Bert Church, well known sheepman, brought his herd of
sheep down from high mountain pastures thru town to ranges
in the lower foothills for the winter months. The sheep were
reported as being in excellent shape.

Earlier in the month Alfred Tresidder, 13-year-old son
of Mrs, Julia Tresidder, a former resident of Grass Valley,
was almost instantly killed when the bicycle he was riding homefrom school was struck by an automobile. The accident occured
in Tonopah, Nevada, to which place the family has moved two years
previously. By mid-month, a third coroner's jury had been
summoned to hear the more than a dozen eye witnesses to the
tragedy. The first two juries were dismissed on technicalities.
