The little judge benefited from
a like community spirit when
she was being treated for the

her home town of Grass Valley

I have been informed that the
historic silver bell which has
hung in the ruined belfry of the
French Corral schoolhouse
nearly 100 years has disappeared. The bell was the
property of the Moulton family,
who purchased the building some
years ago in order to keep it
from being torn down, In a
subsequent sale of the building,
the bell was retained by the
family, and plans were to have
it preserved as a historical relic with the assistance of the
Native Daughters of the Golden West. Hopefully the Sheriff's office will be able to track
it down so it can be returned to
it's rightful place in the community.
There have been two instances
of vandalism at the North San
Juan schoolhouse since the opening of school. Broken locks,
emptying of fire extinguishers,

Frances Baker of French Corral is at home recuperating

Nelson of Nevada City.
Ruby Nobles, who spearheaded community help for both little
girls, anticipated that when Friday's receipts are tallied the
Carrie Nelson Fund will have

have been pouring in from individuals and groups and many
of the letters with money have
not yet been opened.
Friends of the little girl signed
a giant card for her which was
on a stand in front of Alpha.

SACRAMENT O--The California Advisory Board on Underwater Parks and Reserves has recommended that two underwater areas south of Fort Bragg be leased to the Department
of Parks and Recreation from the State Lands Commission.
The Board, meeting September 26 in Mendocino, recommended that an area from Big River north to the northern
boundary of Russian Gulch State Park be assigned to the Department as an underwater park and that the area off the Point
Cabrillo Light Station of the U.S. Coast Guard be designated
as an underwater reserve. Both areas would extend from the
intertidal area to a depth of 180 feet.
Under the Parks Department's definition of underwater
reserve, divers are allowed to freely observe the area but
not to disturb any of the natural features, including animal or
vegetable life. In an underwater park, taking of game fish is
allowed. In either case, the fishing regulations are set and enforced by the State Department of Fish and Game,
The Board also decided to study what knowledge and skills
would be desirable to qualify a person to dive in a state underwater park or reserve. To make such a study, Board Chairman
Dr. John DeMartini appointed a committee of two: Vice Chair.
man James R. Stewart and Parks Department Aquatic Specialist Jack Steinman.

SACRAMENTO -The winter camping season begins OctoLad 1 at Sugar Pine Point State Fark on the west shore of Lake
oe.
The park provides 75 winter camping sites, each witha
snow-plowed parking space and a table and stove. Heated
restrooms and hot water are nearby. Most visitors use motorvehicle camping facilities--camper and trailers--but the hardier
types may pitch tents. You can get camping and hiking advice
from a State Park Ranger.
The surrounding region offers two developed ski areas
within three miles of the park and the whole Lake Tahoe winter
sports complex within easy driving distance.
Accenting the winter scene at Sugar Pine Point are a number of hardy birds to share the grounds with the camper.
Steller's jays, chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers, and others
thrive amid the snow and sometimes subzero temperatures,
Sugar Pine Point State Park is on State Highway 89, just
