. Smallpox vaccinations no
longer recommended
Dr, Louis F, Saylor, state
director of Public Health, said
today that California is no longer recommending routine smallpox vaccination of infants and
children, This decision was
reached at a meeting: of the
California Conference of Local
Health Officers in San Diego
after reviewing the recommendation to discontinue routine
smallpox vaccination issued by
the U.S, Public Health Service
last week,
The policy of routine vaccination for protection against
smallpox began when smallpoxwas widespread and uncontrolled. Today this routine’ policy
unnecessarily exposes a large
segment of our population to the
risk of complications resulting
from vaccination-a'risk greater
than the probability of their contracting smallpox. In fact, there
has not been an imported case
of smallpox into this country
for over 22 years, and no cases
of smallpox have been observed
in California since 1947,
At the present time, smallpox vaccination should roytinely be given only to groups at
special. risk to exposure to
smallpox. These groups include
international travelers to the
few areas in the world where
smallpox is still present and
health services personnel in this
country who are at highest risk
to exposure to a possible imported case of smallpox,
Dr. Saylor cautioned that this
recommendation for the discontinuation. of routine smallpox
vaccination of children should in
no way be interpreted as a signal to de-emphasize any of the
other routine-immunization programs which are still essential,
"A rose is a rose is a rose’
wrote a famious poet many years
ago; another wrote "A rose by
any other name would smell as
sweet", . . .and so it goes,
about the rose, thru miles of
poetry and prose down thru the
ages,
If you want to know about
roses. . ..or any other flowers
for that matter. . . .consult
a professional florist for some
interesting answers. The "language of the flowers" is truly
universal, and is the basis for
much business activity in the
florist's sphere of influence on
our culture.
There are special ways of ar. ranging flowers to speak of love,
to express. Sympathy or. extend
condolences, to congratulate, or
' just to say "Hi, I'm thinking
of you today.” At Nevada City
Florist, 221 Broad Street in
Nevada City, the slogan is 'When
It's Flowers, Say It With Ours."
And the results of their expertise are colorful, fragrant and
very meaningful for every occasion. :
Two years ago, in August,
Jim and Darlene Moberg pur‘When t's Flowers, Say it With Ours’
find Little League Baseball an
enjoyable leisure time pursuit.
Mrs. Rolph orders potted
plants, cut flowers and greenery at least twice weekly to
insure absolute freshness and
high color. Her major markets
are located in Modesto and-‘San
Francisco; and she and the Mobergs make a practice of attending as many trade shows as
possible, to keep abreast of
new developments in this facinating business.
One unusual member of this
"team" is a fabulous Myna bird
named "Joe", who spends his
time at the florist shop keeping
track of all the comings and
goings about the place, Mrs.
Rolph.. tells.an. amusing. stery
about "Joe''and an unsuspecting
customer; who walked -in one
day to discuss some floral problem or other. Joe greeted her
with his first and, to date, only
complete sentence. . . ."Wanta
buy a plant, lady."' "Yes, you
stupid bird,~I do,"" was her
stammered reply!
Nugget to
chased the Nevada City Florist .
from Drew and Jane Elliott; and
installed Darlene's mother,
Connie Rolph, as manager and
head designer. Jim Moberg is
associated with Aerojet in Sacramento; Darlene teaches school
in Chicago Park, where they
make their home. Following
eventual retirement from these
occupations, they plan to devote
full time to the florist business.
The Mobergs and Mrs, Rolph
have diverse interests outside
the business which provide relaxation and fun in their precious spare time. Jim and Dar‘lene are the parents of three
lively sons, Steven, Kirk and
Kevin, all of: whom attend the
Chicago Park School, The boys
are members of 4-H, and their
mother is a 4-H leader. Their
father counts skiing among his
favorite outdoor recreations.
Mrs. Rolph, who also lives in
Chicago Park, is an ardent gardener in vegetables and, believe
it or not, flowers! Darlene has
long enjoyed an interest in
flowers and floral designing, and
is noted for her fine displays
at the annual! County Fair. While
their parents are engaged in
these activities, the three boys
initiate ‘The
Public Pulse’
The Nugget will initiate a new
department, to be knownas "The
Public Pulse", in the issue of
November 3.
