put the mine on a paying basis. The president and directors of
the company decided, as they
have done on a previous occasion, to take a chance and spend
the money.
COSTLY DEVELOPMENT
In the next two years the
company sank two incline shafts
2,000 feet each and deepened
the Central vertical shaft 2,000
feet, making the bottom level
8600 feet measured along the
veins, At the same time they
did’ 17,000 feet of other development work and, mined 243,000
tons of ore which produced one
and one-half million dollars.
The total -deficit for the two
years was $708,000.00, This job
taxed both the men and the
equipment of-the mine to the
limit.
R. H. Bedford was the contractor for the two incline
shafts, and Fred Johnson for
the vertical shaft. The engineering staff consisted of R. W.
Parsons, who had been superintendent under me for a good
many years and J. R. C. Mann.

by Jack Mann, and the connection with the No. 2. shaft involved
the traverse of 4,400 feet of
crooked drift plus 4,300 feet of

The problem of getting the
men and tools to the different
working places on time was a
great one. The contract men
sinking the shafts were.on three
shifts and changed at the face,
while the ordinary miners were
on ‘two shifts. Some of the men
had to go a distance of 8,000
feet underground and had to be
hoisted or lowered throughthree different shafts.
