Q. Ive been getting social
“security since my father had a
stroke and had to quit work.
Tm 17 now, I heard there is
some way I can keep getting the
checks even after I'm 18, Is
this true?
_ A, Yes, If you're not married,
you can get social security until
‘you're 22 if you're a full-time
student. Or if you are so disabled that you can't work, your
-checks would continue for as’
Q,I am a student social security beneficiary and I worked
this summer. Will this work
catise me to lose bénefits?
A. ff you earn more than
$1,680 during the year, some
benefits will be withheld. The
amount -depends on how much
you earn above $1,680. One dollar in benefits is withheld for
every $2 you earn between
$1,680 and $2,880. In addition,
$1 in benefits is withheld for
every $1 of earnings above
$2,880. However, no matter how
much your total yearly earnings
exceed $1,680, you can get a
check for any month in which
you neither earn more than $140
nor perform substantial services as a self-employed person, .
Q. I retired afew years ago
and began receiving social security payments. Recently, Ireturned to work. Must I contribute to social security now?
A, Yes, if your job is covered by social security. Andthis_
is likely, because’ over 90 per
cent of all jobs are covered. The
contributions must be paid without regard to retirement status, age, or whether you are
getting social security payments. An important point is
that the contributions may increase the social security payment you will receive when you
again stop working if your earnings are high enough.
Q. I am a widow with four
young children. I expected my
social security benefits to stop
when I went to work full time.
But I still get the same amount
every month. Why?A. With four young children,
your family is still entitled to
the maximum benefit amount
based on your husband's earnings. Families with three or
more. survivors. entitled to °
monthly benefits usually get this
* maximum. Since your four children continue to collect social
. security, your family keeps getting the same amount -the
family maximum -whether you
work or not. Stopping your check
to each of your children could
cause an interruption in your
payments. For this reason, and
to save administrative costs,
the’ checks continue in your 1
name, ©
Q. I collect social security
widow's benefits, I never workright
ed myself, Will my survivors
get a lump-sum payment when
I pass away?
A. No, The lump-sum pay~
ment is only made after the .
worker's death, and the worker
must have credit for a certain
amount of work under social
security. '

Q. I have already made over

Insignigicant amounts of murcury have been found in California's domestic water supplies,
a special state task force has
reported. Concentrations of the
toxic metal in reservoirs and
other water sources sampled
were said to be less than two
parts per billion.
Even drinking water supplies
near active mercury mines are
safe,. public health sanitary engineers reported to Governor
Ronald Reagan's interdepartmental committee on mercury
in the environment. The committee was appointed in July to
determine if a public health
hazard exists following reports
of elevated mercury levels in
some sport fish and wild fowl.
The group met in Sacramento to
put finishing touches on a bioint logical sampling and testing program being conducted by health,
conservation, and water quality
agencies, .
"We expect to know before opening of pheasant season Nov.

any, are present inthese birds," ,

advised to drill treated seed well
into the ground.and to take precautions . against accidental
spills.
While expressing satisfaction
with the small mercury content
of water supplies in California,
Dr. Kahn said this is not relateed to the level of mercury toxicity in striped bass and other
game fish.
"We believe that micro-organisms in mud and sedimeat

Dr. Kahn said, however, that
recent U, S, Food and Drug Administration tests of fish imported from Hawaii and of mackerel caught off the . southern
California coast showed nonhazardous levels of mercury.
A few striped bass and crayfish caught recently by the Department of Fish and Game in
Carquinez Straits and the Sacramento River near Courtland
also were relatively free of mercury. However, systematic
statewide sampling has just been
completed and test results will
not be known for several weeks.
Dr. Kahn added that State and
regional water quality control
boards have sampled industrial,
agricultural, and municipal
waste discharges. throughout
California without finding appreciable amounts of mercury.
