i i i 4 Rythis time next month the two new doubles tennis courts at Nevada City’sPioneer Park should be well under construction. During their adjourned meeting Monday councilmen received and opened five contractors’ bids for the work. If the figures are correct and the. state approves the contract it should be awarded to Baldwin Construction — of Marysville. Baldwin’s bid for the site work, 450 tons of aggregate base, 230 tons of asphalt concrete, miscellaneous amenities and the finish surface, totaled $22,475. Their bid for the electrical work, header board, wind-screens and nets were $10,900 bringing the grand total to $33,375. The contractor will have three alternates for the drainage system. Baldwin’s bid on the first alternate of 60 to 120 feet of drain was a maximum of $900; 120 to 240 feet, maximum $1,680; or 240 to 480 feet, maximum of $3,240. The alternate will be decided upon after ground is broken. Other bids. were from Hansen Bros., Grass Valley, $39,625.50; Keyava Construction of Carmichael, $37,950; Glen Williams '. Electrical Co. of Carmichael, : $39,192; and Tyson: struction z . CDF advances.: burning hours. The California Division of Forestry has advanced burning hours to provide for burning with valid .permits from 5 p.m. until mi t. Ranger in charge Jack Odgers said that giving the additional two hours is possible because of lowered burning hazards during the 5; p.m. to 7 p.m, period. Councilman Bob Paine referred to the time when the city removed the parking’ meters, at the request of the merchants, only to have to put them back because the parking ‘‘was abused by the merchants.” Downey that the population is growing but the parking spaces aren’t. “We need to keep the shoppers in town rather than somewhere else.” He inquired as to how the city could obtain more parking areas. “We can’t tear down that which tourists are coming to see,” noted Paine. “The city has a real problem and we will have to find more spaces.” He suggested that space will have to be located away from town, alae a merchants to “exe! their shoe leather and exert a bit more energy.” In other action: -The council heard a request
from Roman’ Rozynski, representing the Nevada County Historical Society, as _to the future of the proposed carriage house at Pioneer Park. He told the council the. society has money set aside for the project which was stopped several years ago due to the master plan adoption for the park. Adding that the carriage and other items were deteriorating, he said they had someone to restore them but not if they are replaced in the area they are presently located. . After checking over the ‘master plan, Robinson said a ‘County Nugget 3 the city is looking at least five years into the future before the caretakers’ ‘cottage can be ~ moved and thé carriage house _ built. “Why not leave it where it is now and make an amendment to the plan,” Mayor Rankin queried. A decision was tabled until ‘Oct. 14 so: council members can look over the site. _ «Ray Dalugge, owner of the Crazy Horse. Inn on Commercial Street, asked the council to leave the PG&E pole outside his business so he could havé it carved into a totem pole. ‘After further discussion, in _ which the council appeared agreeable to the suggestion, . they asked Dalugge to bring the carver, Dennis Dickson, to the next meeting to discuss the plans further.
