Vote procedure change The prolonged ~ and sometimes bothersome task of having to register to vote, reregister after moving and to change party affiliation or record a name change is a thing of the past. ' This procedure has been lightened by a new system which will allow voter registration by mailed card. This was signed into law by the Governor. ‘ Under the new provisions, voters need only to pick up a special postage-paid registration card which will be available at public buildings such as post offices. : While this new method might be good for the voter, there was considerable opposition to the bill in the various committees and on the floor of both houses. The measure was favored by the Democrats who outnumber the Kepublicans in both the Assembly and Senate. The ‘Republicans : objected tothe’ new’ system; ‘complaining ‘ ‘that’ ‘it, could’ ‘ lead’ to registration of ‘tombstones and vacant lots.” The Democrats, on the other hand, argued the system of registration would make it easier to encourage voting. _ The overall raising of the. teachers’ salary schedule will make the starting teacher pay $9,699. Salaries range to a maximum of $16,799. Supt. Ellsworth B. Loverin said the decision came after the teachers withdrew a previous porposal which called for an 8 per cent raise this year and a 1976-77 pay hike that would bring their salaries in line with other schools of similar ‘size in California. : Even though the proposal was withdrawn the board will continue to study a plan to raise the teachers pay to an average of other schools in the state, Loverin said. Loverin also shed some light on a recent board decision to consider year-round classes at Nevada Union. Because the school is -overcrowded something has to be done before it opens next year, he said. Since there are a number of plans available for year-round or other alternatives to the nine-month ~ school year, Loverin said, the board has to start studying them now. , The notice of intent to run @ Lon Gilbert FARMERS INSURANCE GROUP HEFFREN INSURANCE AGENCY 1iTW.
