The county . is accessible by rail, the Central Pacific Railroad running along its southern boundary: a considerable distance, and crossing its extreme eastern end, while the Nevada ~ County Narrow Gauge Railroad intersects its central portion, extending north from Colfax to Nevada City and. passing through Grass Valley in its route. Geographically the county lies-a trifle north of the centrai line of.the State, and extendsfrom the Sacramento vatley _on the west to and beyond the summit of the Sierra Nevada. In the western portion the altitude averages some 1300 feet above the sea level,.and the surface consists of gently sloping hills and ridges with here and there large sized tracts of comatively level land.
