Fire season closes out with heavy rains Rain drenched Western Nevada county during the weekend and brought an end to the fire season in Tahoe National Forest, and lessening of restrictions“in the California Division of Forestry territory. CDF reported approximately 2.90 inches of rain and announced open burning hours with permits is now permitted. Previously burning had been limited to daylight hours, However, an official stressed burning permits are required from April 1 to Dec, 1, regardless of weather conditions. The federal agency officially announced its closure of the season at 6 p.m. Saturday night when varying amounts of rain fell in its forests, ’ Castle Peak at the summit received a sprinkle of snow to bring its season pack to between two and three inches, Some snow 4 fell on Highway Interstate 80 late Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Chains advisable signs were posted for a short period. Meanwhile Friday night's rain aided CDF in controlling ablaze at the Birchville dump on Pleasant Valley Road, near French Corral. I apparently started when hot ashes were put in the dump, according to CDF, No damage was reported. Veterans’ seminar scheduled Oct. 18 Grass Valley has been designated by the State Department of Veterans Affairs to host an Income Questionnaire Seminar on October 18. The seminar will be held at "The Office’ meeting room, 102 Richardson Street. The meeting will start at 9:30 am, and Nevada County Veterans Service Officer, John Kootstra, will be host service officer. . These seminars are being
conducted annually by the State Department of Veterans Affairs, State of California, to keep the County Veterans Service Officers all throughout the State upto-date on the new and changing Income Questionnaires which all pensioners and dependent parents must send in each year to the Federal Veterans Administration, if they wish to continue receiving pension checks for the year 1969, The 1968 questionnaires will be mailed earlier this year, and all those veterans receiving pensions (old and new laws) should have these questionnaires in their November lst checks. These questionnaires must be returned to the VA prior to January 15, 1969, Otherwise, these pensions will be discontinued. Also, a new pension law will become effective on January 1, 1969, making the income limitations and pension payments based. on a Sliding FIREMEN IN Nevada City raised $373 for Operation Cookie's scale for those receiving pension under the new law. Those under the old law will only receive an increase of $200 above their present income limita, tions, single veterans from <, $1400 to $1600, and a married veteran from $2700 to $2900, Those receiving pensions under the new law will also receive an increase in their income limitations. The Veterans Administration will advise those pensioners under the old law to check the benefits under the new law and possibly change to the new law prior to April 1, 1969. This new law may be beneficial for many now covered under the old pension law. This year, more than ever, veterans and widows receiving pensions from the VA, and dependent parents receiving DIC from the VA, should contact their local service office and have the ‘staff of these offices help them in filling out these questionnaires. Those covered under the old law should discuss the possibility of changing over to thé’ new law with the service office personnel, in order that they may receive the greater benefits to which they are entitled..
