rn en napa ene Sees moderate uptrend in state e Moderate expansion is on the 1969 economic horizon for California, Bank of America predicted today. The state's growth will be slower than in the recent past _and, indeed, will fall temporarily slightly below the nation's growth rate, Bank economists attribute the slowing to cutbacks in federal spending and the 10 per cent surcharge on personal and corporate income taxes. However, there are four bright spots in the California economic picture: Homebuilding Bank of America expects the number of new residential units started during 1969 to reach 180,000, a 20 per cent rise over 1968, Civilian aircraft industry -Production and employment should expand sharply to meet delivery schedules given impetus by a large and growing backlog of orders, Service industries -These industries are usually much less affected than other industries during periods of moderate economic slowdown, Agriculture -Farm cashreceipts should reach $4,14 billion next year, an increase of three per cent over the 1968 estimate of $4 billion. On the negative side, the bank notes that declining economic activity will be especially evident in non-Vietnam related defense programs. Anticipated cuts in the space budget will also have a depressant effect on the state's aerospace-electronics complex, In contrast to a seven per cent increase in retail-sales in 1968,the bank expects an increase of five per cent next year. However, the increase in new residential units should stimulate sales of home furnishings and appliances, . Bank of America concludes its outlook on the California economy with the advice to closely $39,000 camp job awarded The contract for construction of the South Yuba Trailhead Campground was awarded to California Landscape Company of Marysville, California, according to Curt Hammit, manager of the Folsom District of the Bureau of Land Management. The award bid was for a total of $39,000 which includes only the basic development of the 15 family unit campground. There were eig* “firms which bid on the contract. The bids for construction of the campground only, ranged from a low of $39,000: to a high of $68,000. Work is expected to begin onthe campground soon, The contractor has 120 calendar days in which to complete the contract. The campground is located approximately 12 miles northeast of Nevada City along the North Bloomfield County Road, The campground will serve as the trailhead for the recently completed South Yuba Riding and Hiking Trail. All attempts will be made to keep the existing parking lot open for people who visit to use the South Yuba Trail, Ci eB a. nt a AAI Aa nomy, 69 . watch: 1) the extent and mix of federal expenditure reductions; and 2) changes in monetary pol. icy and financial flows. “ On the first point, the bank says that reductions may not beas great as now officially projected, while a change in the Vietnam situation would . also produce significant changes in the pattern of defense spending in the state. On the second point, "Failure of the Federal Reserve System to ease monetary policy and allow a decline in long-term interest rates would mean a continued shortage of mortgage funds and dampen the expected growth in residential construction,": 7 14 million trees set An all time tree-planting record was set in California's National Forests last year when more than 14,000,000 trees were planted during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1968, according to Forest Service Regional Forester J. W. Deinema in San Francisco. This number of trees represents a30 percent increase over the previous year. Deinema stated that over 35,000 acres of timber-producing lands were planted with Jeffrey pine, sugar pine, and Douglas-fir. The Klamath, Shasta-Trinity, and Lassen National Forests in Northern California accounted for a major portion ofthe year's tree planting program in the State, Over 260,000 acres of National Forest land now have been reforested by regular planting funds, portions of receipts from the sale of timber, and money contributed by the~public to the "Penny Pines Program." Deinema noted that these trees, if planted on a strip of land 300 feet wide, would extend the entire length of California a distance of around 1,000 miles, He added, "The increasing need for wood products, improved watershed conditions, and a concern for natural beauty makes it imperative that California's National Forests be intensively managed for multiple benefits." Three to speak at group meet E. A, "Bub" Tobiassen, Nevada county assessor, Gene Ricker, supervisor, and Frank Clendenen, manager of Nevada Irrigation District, will speak at the Colfax Highway Association's meeting at Chicago Park School October 17, at 7:30 p.m. The three will tell about their work and answer questions. Each year she is deceived in love in the fig orchards of California, So says the Council of California Growers, But it's .a form of deception, contrived by man, without which it would be impossible to grow the state's Calimyrna fig crop worth several million dollars annually, Blastophaga is a tiny wasp. It lays its eggs only in one place in the world — in the seeds of the male Caprifig. In no other place can the female deposit her eggs. In no other place would they hatch. Unfortunately for man, the fruit of the Caprifig is not edible, On the other hand, the fruit of the Calimyrna fig is delectably sweet. But the trouble with growing the Calimyrna, a crossbred variety, is that it lacks any natural GETON THE THRIFT-GO-ROUND BUY ANDHOLD U.S. SAVINGS BONDS SF . fruitility’ means of fertilization. Scientists licked that problem by deceiving the little blastophagas. Male Caprifigs are picked from the trees and placed in bags. The bags then are hung in the Calimyrna orchards, When the tiny female wasp emerges from the Caprifigs she immedfately enters the "eye" of the nearby Calimyrna figs intent upon laying her eggs in the seeds. But her ovipositor is too short to penetrate the seeds of the Calimyrna, Frustrated, she goes to another, and another, Finally, exhausted, she dies, But, in the meantime, she has carried the pollen from the male Caprifigs to the Calimyrna figs, having performed the allimportant task of fertilization. California grows approximately 98.4 per cent of all figs produced in the United States (a few also are grown in Texas) with most of the state's production centered in Fresno, Madera and Merced counties, The Calimyrna variety represents a popular confection in the dried form and also is used extensively as a flavor-enriching filler for baked goods, including the fig newton. Through the California Dried Fig Advisory Board, fig growers are constantly searching for new ways to make figs more popular, Latest innovation is a "fig whip" made from powdered figs.
