NGE —~ semana ‘ i H IN FOR California Second In Nation With Pine, Redwood, Fir SAN FRANCISCO ,,, California, the nation’s second most important forestry products State, is honoring the industry this week, saluting the industry for the second consecutive year, The week has been aside by Act of Congress and Presidential Proclamation to pay tribute tothe products of the forests, which play so important a role in the lives of Americans, Lumber production in California dates back to 1843, In the ensuing years the industry has become an increasingly important. segment of the State's economy, representing about $12 million annually, more than a million employes and a payroll in excess of $7 million. Largest of the three segments of the State's lumber-~ing industry is pine, followed closely by redwood where production has been fairly stable for a number of years since World War II, and the Douglas fir industry, which now accounts for a substantial part of California 's lumber output. . The State possesses a large timber supply, including specialty woods and hasan estimated 360 billion board feet of standing saw timber -about 33 per cent Douglas fir, 28 per cent pine; 24 per cent white fir, which has becomean increasingly valued product and ten per cent redwood, Fallout Shelter , Aid Not Available SACRAMENTO, , The California Disaster Office today announced that no federal or state matching funds are available for the construction of fallout shelters. Many inquiries have been received at civil defense offices concerning matching funds, particularly regarding planned community shelters, The confusion has arisen in part because the federal government has a matching funds program for prototyle shelters developed to familiarize citizens with various design possibilities, However, funds appropriated in fiscal years 1960 and 1961 for the prototype shelter program have been entirely committed, No funds for private shelter construction have been appropriated in the current budget.
