AN OPEN LETTER
TO OUR NEIGHBORS
IN NEVADA COUNTY
*
This week..National Forest Products Week.. finds your
Lumbermen far from being jubilant. In fact, for many, they are
nearing their last year as active members in our Nation's oldest
and greatest industry.
During these past two years we have seen demand for lumber
give way to over-supply brought about by a nation which has
. finally caught up with its building and is now taking a breather.
NEW STRETCH---This recently opened stretch of Hiway 49 on the way to North This you might call an adjustment period. But to the LumberSan Juan cuts out many curves and dangerous turns. man, who, since rld War II, has remodeled, rebuilt, and .
invested tremendous sums of money in the betterment of his op-erations, it can prove disastrous.
Today, hardly a week goes by without word of another lumber
operation shutting down and auctioning off.its equipment. The
Western Pine Association reports that within their region, comprising ten western states, production has fallen off approximately 18% since 1959; from an annual 10 billion feet to an
anticipated 8.2 billion this year. °
The solution to this is not an easy one. We know that a
basis for our national economy starts with building homes.
The flow of other goods always follows: Your appliances, your
furniture, etc. But, before a home is built, there must be a
need. At the end of World War II there was a lot of catching
up to do. Men coming home needed a place to live-they lived
in attics, garages, even remodeled chicken houses-these men
were going to obtain houses to live in, regardless; they weren't
concerned about building costs or interest rates.
At first they obtained a tract house; this served their purpose
for a while; then, as their families grew they built someting
better. Today they have what they were after, there is no longer
a need.
As an industry we know we cannot continue lumber menuteeturing as we knew it yesterday. Instead, many of us must drop
~ eae ee Se out of the race. The ones remaining must improve their facil; a SBS . oe ities, integrate their operations, and utilize everything from the

will cut it intolarge slabs for further processing. Tail sawyer is John Eramouspe. We, in Western Nevada County, are at a great disadvantage.
First, we are limited to truck shipment only. This causes
additional expense in order to ship east, for all lumber
shipped aboard truck must be rehandled from the truck to
j rail for eastern shipment. In an industry where 1 to 2% on .
sales is considered a fair profit, these additional handling
a costs can prove crippling.
Second. In our area we are blessed with wonderful climate
we ls gaia THE FOLLOWING HARD 10 GET SIDINGS and very picturesque surroundings. This ideal living condition prompts many people to retire in this area, and we
find many who live here commute to neighboring towns and
cities. To these people who are not connected in any way
with the lumber industry, and who are not dependent upon
it, we find many that look down upon it. . These people see
only the bad side of our industry, They see areas recently
logged; it no longer looks the same; Temporarily the beauty
is gone; it will come back with the growth of young trees
z for our children to enjoy. But, during the interim it neither

owner or the logger.
For a nation that is primarily housed in wood, and whose
growth and prosperity has been greatly dependent upon the woodworking industry, we in the lumber industry take pride.
