live, And Let Live Office parties, conventions, outings and fraternal parades and celebrations are all part of the American scene, In our profession we have had the pleasure of attending many of them, either as participants or an invited ‘ guest, Chambers of commerce are keen competition with each other fo attract these organizations to their area because it means business for the merchants, bars, restaurants and hotel owners, These celebrations sometimes. offer entertainment for the entire community, with parades, contests and other activities, Nevada( County Rainfall Gauge Nevada City Max Min R ot ll 75. 41 iZ° 78° 42 13 74 41 14 74 33 iS 76° 32 16 72 32 17° 73-37 Rainfall to date 3.25 Rainfall last year .14 Grass Valley Max Min R Oct ll 80 45 12 80 46 13 80 45 14 83. 38 15 84 38 16 82 40 17 84 43 Rainfall to date 2.79 Rainfall last year .12 NEVADA COUNTY NUGGET, PUBLISHED EVERY WEDNESDAY BY NEVADA COUNTY PUBLISHING CO, 318 Broad Street, Nevada City, Ca, . 95959 Telephone 265-2471 Garrett Stack, Editor ‘Second class postage paid at Nevada City, California, Adjudicated a legal newspaper of general circulation by the Nevada County Superior Court, Juce 3, 1960. Decree No, 12, 406, Subscription Rates: one year, $3,00; two years, $5.00, re 1967 a A pastes CALIFORNIA NEWSPAPER PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION We agree that they do have an economic impact. upon the community and they break the monotonies of an otherwise uneventful and sometimes dull existence, What these organizations do, of course, is there own busihess, Of course too, they are in the public: eye during these public stagings and most of them do their utmost to maintain a respectful and attractive public image, How much these. celebrators eat, how much noise they make, and how much they drink is all part of the "spirit" of the affair at hand, and rightly so. And we believe that that is their business, Even, how much of a fool anyone wants’ to make of himself during the celebration is that individual’s business, it's all in fun, But when it comes to turning some of these people loose, driving cars on the public highways, with their reflexes and mentality. stunned by the effects of alcohc!l it ceases to be funny and it becomes the business of those -eoncerned with the life and safety of its citizens and it becomes our'business, ~ In many instances these accidents that. happen only cause damage, death -or injury to the person at. the wheel, But it's only by God's grace ‘that at that instant .somé ‘father, taking his children on a weekend drive isn't’ in thepathofthe drunken monster at the wheel of the other car, We suggest that those planning these celebrations with such ritual, protocol and care, do, with equal fervor, examine themselves and include in their program a committee of those who are more moderate in indulgence to see that those who have more or less "gone overboard" don't do it literaly. We suggest that this committee see to it that when any of their brethern appéar to be in a condition where it would be unsafe for them to operate a motor vehicle that they assert the same rity that they use in their
rituals and see to it that someone else, more capable, drive the vehicle or impound it until’ the situation is corrected -or operate a shuttle bus for them, We suggest that this "Operation Safety" would create abetter public image and who knows how many lives it would save, 4-H Work Day A 4-H work day and barbecue is scheduled at Condon Park, Woodbridge Metcalf Fir Tree . Arboretum, Grass Valley, Saturday, 4-H Club members will begin the work. day at 2 p,m,, driving stakes, putting up wire deer guards, replacing shingle shades and other cleanup chores, At 5 o'clock the group will . use Condon Park's new roofed barbecue building for their bar-becue, Those planning to attend are requested to bring their own meat, buns, plates, Coffee, cocoa and salad will be provided at a small charge, October 18, 1967 "A Good Time Was Had By All?” Letters : Dear Mr, Stack:-—" += I have just had the opportunity to read your editorial in the October 15th issue of the Nugger, and want to tell. you I think the editorial is splendid, ° } admire your forthright stand in support of the presidency, the excellence of the policy you enounce and the expression of your beliefs and feelings, Many a “big city" editor should have the courage and the faith in America you have demonstrated, May many years of laurels and prosperity be yours, ~ Sincerely, JOHN W. MAGENNIS 1180 Que Street Sacramento, Calif, 95814 Dear Sir; I should like to express the thanks and appreciation of the Board of Directors of the Twin Cities Concert. Association for your wonderful cooperation and assistance during the past Concert Season, Your generous publicity ‘and favorable editorial comment were most gratifying and added immeasurably to: the success of our series, We have now completed arrangements for the 1967-1968 Season, which we expect to be just as outstanding as the last, and we hope that you will find it as enjoyable as we anticipate, Sincerely, — MARIAN M, PADGETT, Secretary Twin Cities Association Concert Why All The Rush?‘Recently, a blue-ribbon commission of medical and. social “experts” has completed a nation-wide study of American drinking habits and arrived at the conclusion that the legal drinking age should be lowered to 18 years, They point to the age limit of 21 as "hypocritical" and largely “tunenforceable." This is the gist of the report of the Cooperative Commission. on.-the Study of Alcoholism; a group designated in 1961 by a federal grant,The:commission, ‘in its course of study and referring to the age limit.of 21. says it “creates a situation reminiscent of the Prohibition era, "Over 75 per cent of high school students report they have had alcoholic beverages more than once prior to graduation and one-third state they drink with some regularity," We say, "Harrah!" for those who haven't tried it and offer our congratulations to those who have tried it out of curiosity and then left it alone, : And we also commend the parents and guardians of these children who have instilled a sense of dignity, individuality and value into the minds of their offspring We are neither teetotalers or prohibitionists, but why the rush? What's so big or important about being old enough to buy a drink? What does it really accomplish? Why should it be legal for a youngster at such a critical time in his life to culture a taste for something which even many "grown-ups" fail miserably to master. Is there no other "pastime" that the funds used for this study could have been used to channel the activities of our youth to a more advantageous accomplishment? What has happened to parental authority when one-third of our children in their teens drink with some regularity? Aren't rsd of — children interested enough in their offspring to ere they are and what they are doing--eve ? Impossible? No! ‘ _ — Bar and tavern operators aren't babysitters, They shouldn't be held responsible when a minor, through some disguise represents himself to be older than he is, What's happened to family life? Have these bonds and respect for authority been replaced by television, overemphasis on sex education or those who would have high school sports activities on the same level as college atheletics? , Then comes the question of confusion. One law says that 18year-olds can buy a drink, but another law says that parentalauthority and control is effective until a person is 21, A parent might say to his child,."You can’t drink until you're 21, because until you are 21 I am responsible for your well-being and by law in control of your activities," To which the child could answer, "The law says I can have a drink when I’m 18," Confusing, isn't it? We're agin’ it!
