ee Na: Ne One of the pleasant things about "people watching" around these parts is to come upon a bus load of Senior Citizens do‘ing their travel thing thru our foothill country. Groups of this type do not limit their trips to the summer months only; one is apt to see their special charter buses at any time of the year up here. . . rain, shine, sleet or snow. These fine older. Citizens bring with them an unbounded enthusiasm for sightseeing, good food and souvenir buying that is downright amazing. And, their energy is incredible. . . any one of them could no doutt easily "outwalk" the writer any old time! As a goodly segment of our society, they are doubtless better acquainted with notable points of interest cross-country than many of the natives in any of their "ports of call."’ They really know how to make the most of their Golden Years and more power to them. * * * The mail frequently brings us nice things. . . a case in point of recent date was the warm and complimentary note from Anne Peterson of Spring Hill Manor in reference to the Business Profile on that fine establishment in the Sept. 20 issue of the Nugget. Thanks, Anne for them kind words. * * * There are some awfully good , books available for your late ‘Fall and Winter reading sessions this year. . . I'd like to call your attention to a few of them. "Sir Francis Drake,’’ by George Malcom Thomson is a stirring account of the great hero and pirate who died in 1596 off the Panamanian coast after a "'career" which almost defies description, Thomson has done a remarkably colorful job of bringing the man and scoundrel to vivid life again. A particularly readable novel, for those interested in the activities of a trial lawyer, is "The Lawyer" by Albert Gerber. Within its pages the reader is taken thru the central character's education for his chosen profession, his earliest beginnings in a law firm, his first appearances in a court of law and the gradual development of an exciting legal career. There is great suspense and much dramatic action. . providing the reader with a book which, once started is not to be put down until the last word is.read. "Voices From The Big House" by 10 authors, edited.by Frank Earl Andrews and Albert Dickens who are serving terms of 67 and 51 years respectively includes stories covering practically every facet of prison [Notes off the Cuff” By P. L. Smith life in largely fictional form. The authors are convicts serving anywhere from a minimum of 30 years to a maximum of
life in New Jersey's prisons. The book will keep the reader fascinated for several hours of pleasantly informative reading. * ** There's a great big black cat in my neighborhood. easily twice or more the size of any "average" cat.. who has a deadly vendetta going against blue jays. All summer long he tried, in vain, to bring at least one of those feathered [ fiends to "justice" and usually ended up with nothing to show for his efforts. A lot of the jays have left the area, but a few mornings ago Mr. Cat had "his day!" After a determined bit of stalking across lots he made his move — like greased lightning — afd came off the winner . . of one big tailfeather. It was very amusing indeed — to see him walking back home high, wide and handsome, . . as tho’ wearing Seven League Boots. . . carrying the feather so proudly in his mouth. It made his day, and no doubt gave him something to think about all winter.
