BY DEAN THOMPSON
EX CLUSIVE!
Twentieth Century Fox studios is considering Nevada
City asthe setting for a forthcoming movie---Return To
Peyton Place.
Chamber of ‘commerce officials in Nevada City last
week sent to TCF photos of the downtown area for background information.
Potential date for the city togo "on stage” isnot known .
But if chosen, the city will become part of that world
which is a Hollywood stage for a period of three weeks.
One of the first comments regarding the possible shooting of a TCF film in Nevada City came in the form of
a question: ‘
"Do you suppose thatnew committee on ‘good' movies
would allow a Peyton Place setting in Nevada City?"
Speaking of the proposed publication of movie ratings
by the aforementioned Grass Valley committee:
Is it possible this move might reopen Nevada City's
theater? We can imagine the billboard---"Banned in
Grass Valley, see it now in Nevada City."
The Greatest Show on Worth---the 1960 political
campaign:
An eighth grade class, six knew the names of the vice_presidential candidates.
A high school class discussion of the candidates and the
election, “What election?” asked one of the girls.
T wo elementary students repeating what they said their
teacher told them and drawing this conclusion: "Well,
if I ye old enough to vote, I'd never vote for Nixon
‘cause he wouldn'tfightfor his country---he's a Quaker,
you know."
(To set the record straight: Both Nixon and Kennedy
served in the armed forces; Nixon is now a member of
the Methodist Church, although from Quaker stock--but the statement was a new twist to the so-called
religious issue).
A bumper-sticker poll across Northern California one
week ago: Kennedy, 73.7%; Nixon, 26.3%.
Figures don't lie, but..:
Did you notice the recent newspaper report citing estimated costs of the Nevada City downtown freeway and
alternates?
And did younotice the cost of each alternate was added
to the cost of the downtown route in order to arrive at
the “total cost" of each alternate?
And then did you notice the suggestion that you clip
the report and use it as a guide to your understanding of

Trims bear River Bridge Funds Given
Paint-Up Chairman
Named In NC
Project: Paint-Up in Nevada City took official form
at a Monday night meeting
of the Nevada City Chamber
of Commerce.
Chamber President Marv
Haddy appointed Otis Gaylord temporary chairman of
the proposed community
project, and an immediate
poll of organizations became
the first objective of the
project.
Keith Thompson, Fuller
Paint Co. representative,
told the two dozen community representatives about
past painting projects in
Weaverville and Portola. He ~
warned that it was a major
project with many pitfalls.
Thompson suggested a 60
day period of basic research
prior to a final-decision on
the project. If local organizations do not give unqualified support to the proposal,
he warned the project could
fail. .
' Following his suggestion ,
Gaylord asked representatives of the various organizationsto seek the feeling of each of their groups
and report back as soon as
possible. Organizations not
represented at the meeting
will also be polled.
Feature of the evening was
a color film showing the
Weaverville project..
This film will be shown
Wednesday night to Nevada
City Lions, and Thursday 'to
the Senior Citizens.
Organizations desiring to
show the film should contact
Mrs. Gwen Anderson, chamber secretary.
Project: Paint-Up will do
more than just paint up the
downtown area, Thompson
told the chamber.
"You will be amazed at
the community spirit that
will develop after this project iscompleted, " he said.
A.T. Parsons argeed that
in Weaverville shortly after
the project was completed a
tour of the residential areas
showed they, too, had been
painted and cleaned.
Numerous committees and
many months are necessary
to plan for the two days that
would likely see all the work
done, Thompson said.
Cooperation of downtown
owners and tenaunts is necessary. Amateur painters,
cooks and entertainers are
necessary for the work days.
Cost ofthe paint would be
borne by tenants or owners,
but at wholesale prices
through the cooperation of
Fuller Paint Co. and Alpha
Hardware, local distributor,
Major cash outlay would
be the insurance necessary
to protect the chamber of
commerce intheevent of
of accident. Special fund
raising activities could be
used to finance this phase.
Thompson was asked what
size labor force was necessary
on work days.
"It takes.everybody in the
town,” he replied.
