BDITORIALS .
THANKS FOR THE VOLUNTEERS
The Twin Cities area is fortunate to have so
“ many people who are willing to step forward to
help in times of-emergency. :
_This was demonstrated again Saturday when
many residents quickly responded and gave all
kinds of-_aid during rescle operations at the
Broad Street Bridge in Nevada.City.
In a world where there is growing tendency for
people to shy away from becoming involved in
the business of others, we are constantly amazed how many people there are who are willing
to become involved when the chips are down:
All of the people, police, firemen,, deputies
and just plain people who stepped in to help
Saturday should be praised.
On the other hand, we had the crowds of thrill
seekers who jammed their way tothe edge of the
disaster area and hindered those who were trying to work.
It is part of human nature to be curious, we
should know for curiosity is one of the things
thatkeeps a newspaper in business, but when
curiousity takes over good sense and people
endanger themselves ar others, then it has
gone too far.
Wewere frankly amazed that representatives
of the contractor and police had to make repeated loud speaker appeals to the crowd to
get back away from the accident. scene to allow
rescue operations to proceed.
We don't really understand what everyone had
come tosee. If most of those who crowded around had actually seen crushed bodies and heard
the screams they seemed so anxious to see and
hear a majority of them probably would have
been sick and would wish for a long time that
they had stayedhome. So why not stay home?
We hope that this area does not have to call
-. on its large corps of volunteers for such an
emergency again for a long time tocome. But
if there is another incident such as we had
Saturday, we hope the people will use more
sense and stay out of the way.
THE BIG NEVADA COUNTY DRAW
The huge success of the Sierra Nevada Memorial
Hospital Auxiliary home and garden tour and
the Chamber's Trade Fair Saturday proves again
what an attraction this area is for people near
and far. .
Several people asked about the Trade Fair
Saturday. Th®y know it was goinc on, they
hadcome here specifically for that purpose.
It is interesting to see what will oe peorle
in here. Several plane loads of pedple few
into Loma Rica Airport Saturday just to go to
the house tour. We have several things here
that people living elsewhere want. If we can
let people know what we have, we will be
able to attract a lot of money into this area,
Sut that will be the job of the new county‘widerchamber Of Commérces ee

One of the last remnants of the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad grudgingly gave way to progress in 1963 when the trestle over
Bear River was blasted down so that Rollins Dam could be constructed
by the Nevada Irrigation District.

THE IRONIES OF BRIDGE WORK
We became very excitedFriday. We were sitting in the National
Hotel having lunchand listening to five men from Los Angles
debate about whether or not they wanted to go to wark on the
Broad Street Bridge that afternoon.
Sdmething is wrong with the system, we told ourselves, as
weheardthe men recount how they had been told all they had
to do was work three and a half hoursa day to receive $70 each.
We would like to see a few of those $70 days ourselves, we
thought, but these men were unhappy with the deal, There
were not enough assurances and guarantees for them and they
were seriously thinking about getting on the bus again and
beating it back toL.A.
“All you have to do is go out and stand on that bridge deck, "
one of the group pleaded with the rest, “and he said he'll pay
you $70." But they were still unhappy.
This scene suddenly came flashing back to us Saturday afternoon as we stood at the edge of the hole and looked down
at the mass of twisted steel, boards and wet concrete from the
collapsed bridge deck. We suddenly wondered if any of theL,A, men had voted to stay and work on the bridge.

IT IS JUST about time for Grass Valley, the health department
and the redisents of Hills Flat to fish or cut bait on a sewage
system for Hills Flat.
A few months ago County Health Officer Dr. Keith Seolas
issued an order Stating that unless residents and businesses in
Hills Flat corrected faulty systems that were polluting Wolf
Creek, the Health Department would have to take steps to close
down the guilty businesses,
Since then Hills Flat residents have tried annexation to Grass
Valley sothe the city sewer system would become available to
thet, But they became embroiled with isolated areas in Spring
Hill that wantedno part of the plan. The city council more or
les? dumped it back into the laps of the proponents of the
annexation move and said they would act when and if an ann~
exation properly presented to them,
In thé meantime all that stuff is still going down Wolf Creek,
We-wonder-what-will happen next.-.-., . Don-Heagiand---nearly be killed, She wasrightabout you” I remember when
Emma Nevada came back toN.
C, I think every body in N.C,
was at the depot to welcome
her, There aretimesI can hear
her singing the Last Rose of
Summer, Therewas alot of wet
eyes when she finished. She
filled the old Nevada Theatre.
Of course a bunch of us young
rough necks sneaked in. I can
look overto Sacramento St. and
see the two houses on stilts.
They still look like two sore
