PG&E joins in gas conversion projects. In its continuing research and development program, Pacific Gas and Electric Company today announced a $335,100 contribution towards a joint industrygovernment project on coal gasification. The company's contribution is in support of 1971 expenditures under an agreement of the American Gas Association and the United States Interior Department for joint funding of a coal gasification research program which could cost an estimated $296 million over the next eight years, The ‘AGA (of which PG&E is a member) represents 345 member companies, serving more than 41.5 million homes, businesses and industries, In announcing the grant, PG&E Executive Vice President John F. Bonner emphasized that the company traditionally has been in the forefront of research and development, not only with its own forces but also by its participation in various industry and governmental programs. The company is studying other potential processes for increasing the nation's natural gas supply with a view toward research support of those that hold promise, he said. Recently PG&E announced a $10 million commitment toward a joint industry-government project for research and development of a demonstration fast breeder nuclear power plant. It also has announced it will start construction shortly on anew research and development center in San Ramon for the company’s staff of 75 men and women who are presently operating at the Emeryville re© search facility, used by the department since 1926, Coal gasification is a process that produces high quality, clean-burning natural gas from coal. The primary purpose is to supplement the existing reserves of natural gas. A principal coal conversion process is known as HYGAS, developed by the Institute of Gas Technology. The name HYGAS is derived from a condensation of the words, "hydrogen," which plays a major role in the chemical conversion process, and "gasification," the object of the process. Three pilot plants will be in operation in the near future. One already is operating in Chicago. A second will begin shakedown operations in Rapid City, » S. D. late this fall, and a third will be under construction soon at Homer City, Pa. "PG&E has actively been involved in research and development for more than 50 years," Bonner said. "Our engineering research department now is involved in about 150 research projects in such fields as extra high voltage transmission, radiation measurement, aquatic environment, materials testing and corrosion control, tp oy om “Tne Nevada County Nugget.
