oe RY na en vi A The Nevada County Nugget,” Wednesday, October 20/1971 North San Juan News Washington By Idabel Covert The North San Juan Ridge Riders horsemens group presented their first annual horse and tack auction Sunday, Oct. 17, at the Fire Hall in N. San Juan, Cal Milhous was the auctioneer, with John Reed helping out occasionally. Over 100 items were sold, including two horses and some very old harness, Refreshments were made available by the ladies of the club. It is hoped this will be an annual event, Attending the auction was supervisor Larry Filer from the Penn Valley area. There is a new business es-tablishment in North San Juan which seems likely to become a favorite gathering place for the local young people. Toki Steele was born in Okinawa, where she met her husband Bill. After his return from Vietnam service, they moved here. He was familiar with the Nevada county area, and of course liked it verymuch, They opend their small restaurant and soda fountain July 4. 365°" Five of this area's young people are on the various high [issenen Sgn No.1Chain Saw ithe omelite1 Ho 50 Automatic Chain Saw Automatic oiling for bar and culling chain adjustable for light or heavy-duty cutting. This team has won all their’ games this year, having played Placer Joint Union High School, Oakmont, and Del Cro. Tommy Browning is on the Junior Varsity. They have won two games out of five played so far, and Ed Stuart is on the Varsity team, which has not been playing as well as the other teams. Among places of historical interest in the San Juan Ridge area the North San Juan United Methodist Church is among the first. This church was built in 1857, and services have been held continuously in the same building ever since. There are other churches in this Conference which were established before the San Juan Church; but most of them were either completely or partially destroyed by fire early in their history, and have been rebuilt, some of them more than once, The church is typical of such houses of worship, a small white frame building about 40'x60', with a small steeple which was added’ sometime in the early 1900s. This steeple houses a bell which was cast in San Francisco in 1883, According to information written inside the bell, it. was shipped to T. R. Bartley, North San Juan. Mr, Bartley may have been the pastor of the church, Inside, the most striking feature is a large mural behind the pulpit, of Christ and a group of small children, which is very recent. The painting was done by two members of the church in 1967, as a-Christmas gift to the congregation. Any visit to North San Juan should include this building. BEHIND SPD 265-4642 _ News By Judith Stewart Ever since I have lived beside the Yuba Piver, I have wondered just how it got its name. I found this quotation from Fremont's memoirs. "We traveled across the valley plain, and in about 16 miles reached F eather River, at 20 miles from its junction with the Sacrarrento, near the mouth of the Yuba, so called from a village of Indians who live on it. . . ." Yuba is said by some authorities to have been the name of a tribe of Maidu Indians, the Yu-ba, who lived on the banks of the Feather River. Some say that the name Yuba is a corruption of the Spanish word uba, or uva, meaning "grapes," and was given to the river on account of the wild grapes which grew luxuriantly along its banks. However it was named, it is interesting living on its banks and watching it change with the weather. The Washington Community Club held its October meeting Monday night. Along with the regular meeting, to discuss the Halloween party for the Washington children, dessert and coffee was served and a little party held to welcome the new members. ; The Washington Jr. Club also met Monday and made plans for its Halloween party, Saturday night, October 30, "Trick or Treat" will be on Sunday night, October 31. The Jr's
want the women of the Community Club to fix them a Spook House, We hope to find an-unoccupied house in ‘Vashington which can be used for the event. One of the newer members of out community are the Walter (Bud)Mehne family. The Mehnes purchased land in Washington about three years ago and are about to finish a home they have built themselves, Bud says that is something he would never do again --too much work --They do have a lovely home though --on the hill overlooking the twown. The Mehnes moved to California 11 years ago from Wisconsin, where they had owned and operated a large chicken ranch. They had one of the largest poultry. farms in that state; some years raising as many as 1,000,000 birds. When they first came to California it was to Palo Alto where Bud was an employe of ConSolidated Foods, as director of operations. He now is. a. management consultant, involved in the Data Procescing business, connected with installing such equipment. His business takes him away from his home yery little now. So he can enjoy the clean fresh air living in this area that he loves, Bud and his wife Shirley are active members of the Sierra Club and love to go bottle hunting and touring in the mining country. They hope to do a lotmore of that now that their home is almost completed. And now that they have more leisure time, they are planning to get involved in community ~dctivities. Shirley is a member of the Nevada County Chamber of Commerce. IN NEVADA COUNTY IN 1948: Dr. Walter E.
