Lester Pelton, invenThree Dollars Was Parlayed Into Millions The vast Hearst newspaper empire can trace its beginnings to the Nevada City area. George Hearst, father of the newspaper giant, William Randolph, lived in a shanty at Chimney Rock, half-way between Nevada City and Grass Valley. According to the story, Hearst at one time had to choose between paying his meat bill or buying a pair of overalls. gave him credit so Hearst bought the overalls and with $3 in his pocket headed for the Washoe Territory in Nevada where he struck the fabuliously wealthy Comstock silver lode. The ore from the Comstock Lode was brought across the Sierra and assayed in Ott's Assay office. The. butcher Pelton Water Wheel Was Developed Here tor of the Pelton water wheel, developed his invention to make more efficent use of hydropower in nearby Camptonville in Yuba County, but his first commercial wheels were developed and fabricated inthe Miners Foundry in Nevada City. A fine example of a -Pelton wheel may be seen in front of the Miners Foundry directly below the Purity Store parking lot.
The Pelton wheel revoluntionized the use of hydro-power for generation of electricity and was widely used to supply power to the local mines. The old North Star powerhouse in Grass Valley which is. now being converted intoa museum of relics of the area's hard rock mining industry, houses one of the largest Pelton . wheels in the world. After developing his initial wheels in Nevada City, Pelton moved his operations to San Francisco where the firm which still bears his name is manafacturing selling Pelton wheels to turn the turnbines for electric power to light the homes and turn the wheels of industry in ‘the west. ° $150,000, 000 a year to grape growers. The wine industry has its troubles, too. The nation's free trade policy poses acontinual threat of more imports. National consumption of less than one gallon per capita per year barely holds its own although total consumption increases with population growth.
