Lester Pelton, invenThree Dollars
Was Parlayed
Into Millions
The vast Hearst newspaper empire can trace
its beginnings to the
Nevada City area.
George Hearst, father
of the newspaper giant,
William Randolph, lived
in a shanty at Chimney
Rock, half-way between
Nevada City and Grass
Valley.
According to the
story, Hearst at one
time had to choose between paying his meat
bill or buying a pair of
overalls.
gave him credit so
Hearst bought the overalls and with $3 in his
pocket headed for the
Washoe Territory in
Nevada where he struck
the fabuliously wealthy
Comstock silver lode.
The ore from the Comstock Lode was brought
across the Sierra and
assayed in Ott's Assay
office.

Pelton Water Wheel
Was Developed Here
tor of the Pelton water
wheel, developed his
invention to make more
efficent use of hydropower in nearby Camptonville in Yuba County,
but his first commercial
wheels were developed
and fabricated inthe
Miners Foundry in Nevada City.
A fine example of a
-Pelton wheel may be
seen in front of the
Miners Foundry directly
below the Purity Store
parking lot.
The Pelton wheel revoluntionized the use of
hydro-power for generation of electricity and
was widely used to supply power to the local
mines. The old North
Star powerhouse in
Grass Valley which is.
now being converted intoa museum of relics of
the area's hard rock
mining industry, houses
one of the largest Pelton .
wheels in the world.
After developing his
initial wheels in Nevada
City, Pelton moved his
operations to San Francisco where the firm
which still bears his
name is manafacturing
selling Pelton wheels to

$150,000, 000 a year to
grape growers.
The wine industry has
its troubles, too. The
nation's free trade
policy poses acontinual
threat of more imports.
National consumption of
less than one gallon per
capita per year barely
holds its own although
total consumption increases with population
growth. Population
seek out new valleys
and hillsides on which
to grow their grapes.
Californians, however, may safely leave
such problems tothe experts and during Nation-.
al Wine Week get ac-.
quainted--or better acquainted--with the
state's superb wines.
The Roman poet, Horace, said 2,000 years

Two China Town
Sites Still Can Be Seen
_ The last remnants of Nevada
City's once large China town may
be seen today on Commercial
Street at the intersection of York
Street.
One. of the two buildings, the
old Chinese Laundry, has been
restored and renovated and is now
used as a gallery by the Nevada
City Artist's Association. The
second building which adjoins the
gallery is abandoned,
