CHEESE EHO EEE oer EE Eee ee Ot Tunneling And Digging Would Have To Wait For More Cash CHALK BLUFF Auburn 1861 Chalk Bluff City paused and took a deep breath. A long dry summer had left it exhausted, resting now in the long tawny * shadows of fall. The oaks were yellowing and the dogwood in the ravines was turning vermillion from all shades of pink, The Digger pines had spidery balls of pitch dripping from the branches There had been no rain for a long time. The town was nearly deserted. Even the mayorhad gone. He left with a party of young men to join the California Regiment. Those left felt the quietening spell of the season and waited with the warm air and thick dust for the. storms of winter. One small cabin held two miners who surveyed the season looking over their toes as they lay on their bunks facing the open door.-They had a great deal to do, Their latest claim was showing promise. But they lay, silently waiting. Their plans formed in their minds and presently they would act. The tunneling and digging and building of sluice boxes would have to wait. The first step was getting cash. At this time of year most of the big mines weren't working because the water supply was so low. The South Yuba Canal Company was planning to build a ditch nearby and many of the miners expected to work several weeks earning wages before returning to their own projects. 50-60 men were already at work on the SteepAnti-Rumford Initiative Gets More Backing The California State Council of the Steuben Society of Americahas endorsed Proposition 14 on thestate ballot, itwas announced today by Louis T.
