With the invasion of California scenic highways may become*as renowned for their beauty as they now are for their _efficiency, according to a newsletter of the California Roadside Council. The council, a statewide citizens’ organization with headquarters in San Francisco, is dev oted to the promotion of beauty in our highways and their environs. The council's hopeful prediction ‘is based on present plans for the development of scenic highways within the California State Highway System. Special standardsto be applied to designated scenic highways were authorized by the Legislature in its 1963 session and now are being formulated in more specific detail. Highways 20 and 49 have been designated as part of the state's scenic highway program. “Most encouraging," the Roadside Council states, “is the increased attention being directed to esthetic principles of highway design, which we understand are ‘ to be applied in new construction, especially within the system of scenic highways. Among these principles are the careful fitting of highways to the landscape, curvilinear alignment pleasing to the eye, and preservation of plant growth and other natural features’ View points and roadside rests, now inthe program, will provide another welcome feature, the council points out. As specified in the Scenic Highways Act, counties traversed by scenic highways are expected to protect their scenic corridors, the adjoining areas which fall within the motorist's natural range of vision. Such protection may be afforded by means of local ordinances regulating commercial and other development which would tend to impair the corridor's scenic quality. Where a scenic highway traverses city territory, the city similarly is expected to take what steps are necessary to ensure maximum attractiveness. Several counties already have adopted special scenic highway zoning regulations and others are Scenic Highways Progress Seen making preliminary studies. The most comprehensive scenic highway zoning, according to the Roadside Council, has been done by Monterey and Santa Clara counties. The interest with which California's scenic highway plan is being regarded throughout the nation is mentioned by the council as an indication of growing realization of the importance of beauty as an economic as well as an esthetic and recreational factor in modern development programs, Johnson Accepts Post U.S. Representative Harold T. (Bizz) Johnson, Democrat of Roseville, has accepted Senator Pierre Salinger's invitation to serve as honorary chairman of the Salinger campaign in the 19-county 2nd Congressional District.
Johnson will assist the Salinger campaign chairmen from Siskiyou County on the Oregon border to Inyo County on the Southern Nevada border. brush in planted areas, considerable competition for these elements results, Uncontrolled, the brush soon overtops and crowds out the pine seedlings resulting in vast areas of brushfield. Application of a herbacide is one method used to hold the brush species in check enabling the young pine seedlings to overtop the brush and be on their way to the production of one of our most valuable resources timber. L The physicians of California consistently have maintained that adequate medical care should be available to all people of this State, regardless of race, creed, color or financial status. For those over age 65 in California, health care is provided in many ways. There are medical insurance programs which can be bought independently at reasonable cost. Other private and public programs are available where extensive medical costs would be a hardship. The recent Kerr-Mills law, for example, enables California to provide broad benefits to those over 65 who might have difficulty in meeting the expenses of prolonged illness. With its full application in this State, as urged by California physicians, the Kerr-Mills law would be even more effective in covering physician, hospital, nursing home, drug and dental needs. No better care for the elderly will be provided by taking an additional $300,000,000 in “medicare” social security taxes out of your pockets, when health care programs are presently available.
