Group asks for lease to run NC airport Chuck Aldridge, spokesman for a partnership of Nevada county residents, has asked the Nevada City Council for a lease to operate the Nevada City airport. Aldridge said Tuesday evening he and his group did not know if their idea would be fea-_ sible "but we want to try, We don't expect to make a profit for possibly five years,"" he added. : All labor for improvements at the airport would be handled: by members of the group, Aldridge said, and asked the city to supply funds for materials, The city has an airport fund which may be used only for improvements at the airport. It came from insurance money when the hangars burned years ago and interest gained on that money, : City Manager Beryl Robinson Jr. told The Union after the meeting the city has $10,542’as of this month in the airport fund. y Aldridge's proposal, which included graveling a 25-foot strip on the airport and picnic and camping areas, was tentatively accepted by the council. Mayor John Rankin appointed a committee, Councilmen Joe Day and Bob Paine and the city manager, to prepare a feasibility study on Aldridge's proposal and report to the council at a later date. All partners in the venture, Aldridge said, are Nevada. county residents interested in aviation. He said the partnership _ would carry liability insurance on the airport, build the graveld strip, the picnic and camping areas and install lights. He hoped to encourage fliers to come here in small planes with their familes, stay overnight in both summer and winter. Courtesy cars for the fliers’ and their families to get around could be arranged, he said and possibly ski resorts could send buses during the skiing season. Aldridge said he had spoken to Councilman Day at the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce meeting and Day had suggested he present his proposal to the council, He also said he had discussed installing of gasoline tanks with Phillips 66 Company through a spokesman at San Francisco, The company will install two 1,000gallon tanks, he said, and charge a. maximum of eight cents profit per gallon. Councilman Arch McPherson said "I have always hoped to see that location an airport again." Two men appeared before the council to ask about the taxi franchise. The franchise, previously held by Bill Akers for Thumper Cab, was revoked at the meeting and,applications for a new franchise opened, Frank Cirino and Melvin James Wilcox Jr., both Nevada City residents, indicated they will apply for the franchise. They must do so in writing, they were tcld. ' An adjourned meeting was scheduled for 8 p.m. Oct. 27 to consider the taxi franchise. No applications will be taken after announced, The council approved a recommendation by the Nevada ‘ City Planning. Commission to charge a fee for variances and use permit applications. A $35 fee was agreed on by the councilmen. and City Attorney William Wetherall instructed to prepare an ordinance fo be read at the next meeting. All requests for a variance and applications for a use permit must be accompanied by the $35 fee, the proposed ordinance will state. The council must
read the ordinance twice, with a minimum of 10 days between readings and 30 days elapse after the vote, before the ordinance takes effect. This would be Dec. 10 at the earliest, the city manager estimated. A letter from William LamWednesday, October 22, beri was read, suggesting that Constitution Day be enlarged to a three-day festival. Lambert said each year Constitution Day had been held more people have appeared in costume each succeeding year. He suggested that if at least one member of each group, club or organization appeared in costume, the tradition would grow and become a success, A third letter from Lambert, as chairman of the Planning Commission and Constitution Day chairman, asked consideration of the council to include more home businesses in a single-family dwelling zone. Councilman Bob Paine said "I want lots of study before charging the zoning laws to allow more _ businesses in the home." Not all neighbors happy with James Lane beauty project The board of supervisors, which earlier gave a property owner permission to beautify some county owned property at the end of James Lane in the Banner Mountain area, had some second thoughts Tuesday. R, W. Downing, who lives at 140 James Lane, complained that the project was not agreeable to all neighbors involved. He said that neither he nor James Taylor, who own considerable frontage on James Lane Circle were consulted concerning the proposal. : Downing objected to denuding the circle of small Cedar and Pine trees, wild lilac, manzanita and plum. He asked that two piles of debris now on the circle be hauled away. He also requested planting meet with approval of Taylor, himself, and the property owner who requested permission to landscape the area.
