Group asks for lease to run NC airport
Chuck Aldridge, spokesman
for a partnership of Nevada
county residents, has asked the
Nevada City Council for a lease
to operate the Nevada City airport.
Aldridge said Tuesday evening he and his group did not
know if their idea would be fea-_
sible "but we want to try, We
don't expect to make a profit
for possibly five years,"" he
added. :
All labor for improvements
at the airport would be handled:
by members of the group, Aldridge said, and asked the city
to supply funds for materials,
The city has an airport fund
which may be used only for
improvements at the airport. It
came from insurance money
when the hangars burned years
ago and interest gained on that
money, :
City Manager Beryl Robinson
Jr. told The Union after the
meeting the city has $10,542’as
of this month in the airport
fund. y
Aldridge's proposal, which included graveling a 25-foot strip
on the airport and picnic and
camping areas, was tentatively
accepted by the council. Mayor
John Rankin appointed a committee, Councilmen Joe Day and
Bob Paine and the city manager, to prepare a feasibility
study on Aldridge's proposal
and report to the council at a
later date.
All partners in the venture,
Aldridge said, are Nevada. county residents interested in aviation. He said the partnership _
would carry liability insurance
on the airport, build the graveld strip, the picnic and camping areas and install lights. He
hoped to encourage fliers to
come here in small planes with
their familes, stay overnight in
both summer and winter.
Courtesy cars for the fliers’
and their families to get around
could be arranged, he said and
possibly ski resorts could send
buses during the skiing season.
Aldridge said he had spoken
to Councilman Day at the Nevada
City Chamber of Commerce
meeting and Day had suggested
he present his proposal to the
council, He also said he had discussed installing of gasoline
tanks with Phillips 66 Company
through a spokesman at San
Francisco, The company will
install two 1,000gallon tanks, he
said, and charge a. maximum
of eight cents profit per gallon.
Councilman Arch McPherson
said "I have always hoped to see
that location an airport again."
Two men appeared before the
council to ask about the taxi
franchise. The franchise, previously held by Bill Akers for
Thumper Cab, was revoked at
the meeting and,applications for
a new franchise opened, Frank
Cirino and Melvin James Wilcox Jr., both Nevada City residents, indicated they will apply
for the franchise. They must do
so in writing, they were tcld.
' An adjourned meeting was
scheduled for 8 p.m. Oct. 27 to
consider the taxi franchise. No
applications will be taken after
announced,
The council approved a
recommendation by the Nevada
‘ City Planning. Commission to
charge a fee for variances and
use permit applications. A $35
fee was agreed on by the councilmen. and City Attorney
William Wetherall instructed to
prepare an ordinance fo be read
at the next meeting.
All requests for a variance
and applications for a use permit must be accompanied by the
$35 fee, the proposed ordinance
will state. The council must
read the ordinance twice, with a
minimum of 10 days between
readings and 30 days elapse after
the vote, before the ordinance
takes effect. This would be Dec.
10 at the earliest, the city manager estimated.
A letter from William LamWednesday, October 22,
beri was read, suggesting that
Constitution Day be enlarged to
a three-day festival. Lambert
said each year Constitution Day
had been held more people have
appeared in costume each succeeding year. He suggested
that if at least one member of
each group, club or organization
appeared in costume, the tradition would grow and become a
success,
A third letter from Lambert,
as chairman of the Planning
Commission and Constitution
Day chairman, asked consideration of the council to include
more home businesses in a single-family dwelling zone.
Councilman Bob Paine said
"I want lots of study before
charging the zoning laws to allow more _ businesses in the
home."
Not all neighbors happy with
James Lane beauty project
The board of supervisors,
which earlier gave a property
owner permission to beautify
some county owned property at
the end of James Lane in the
Banner Mountain area, had some
second thoughts Tuesday.
R, W. Downing, who lives at
140 James Lane, complained
that the project was not agreeable to all neighbors involved.
He said that neither he nor James
Taylor, who own considerable
frontage on James Lane Circle
were consulted concerning the
proposal. :
Downing objected to denuding
the circle of small Cedar and
Pine trees, wild lilac, manzanita
and plum. He asked that two
piles of debris now on the circle
be hauled away. He also requested planting meet with approval of
Taylor, himself, and the property owner who requested permission to landscape the area.
The board ordered the debris
to be cleaned up within 30 days,
and issued a planting moratorium pending "a meeting of

You don’t have to clean your oven any more. It cleans
itself. New gas and electric ovens now do their own dirty

cleans itself. See them at stores everywhere. P G-¥ EE,
