YUBA CITY — The Yuba City
Honkers forgot to look at the
rankings, and the Nevada Union
Miners forgot to play football
Friday as the Honkers upset
the undefeated. Miners 34-18.
A hard hitting Yuba City line
made shambles of what was considered a good Nevada Union
defense, and the Honkers ground
out 284 yards and 21 first downs

The loss was Nevada Union's
first after compiling a season
record of four wins and one
tie. The win for Yuba City was
its second straight after four
losses in a row.
Quarterback Larry Turner

The Honkers had the football
74 plays compared to 48 for
the Miners. Yuba City was forced to punt only once.
Ed Baldwin, with a dazzling
first half performance, kept Nevada Union in the game. The
Miner fullback rushed for 117
yards in nine carries and the
score at halftime was 18-12
in favor of the Honkers.
In the second half Baldwinwas .
called on to carry the ball only
two times, and the Horkers'
ground play of Turner and Haymore was unstoppable.
The Honkers took a quick
12-0 lead, After the Miners
were held on the first series,
a Noel White punt was returned
by Turner from the Honker 16
to their 46,
Nine plays later Turner rolled into the end zone on a fouryard keeper and the Honkers
led 6-0,
A short time later a Gary
Mitchell pass was picked off
and the Honkers had possession .
on the Nevada Union 44.
The Honkers ground it out in
12 plays. Turner scored on a
six-yard keeper.
* The Honker kickoff was returned to the Miner 31 and
Nevada Union went to work.
Mitchell passed for eight yards
to White. Baldwin picked up
three and a pass to Anthney
was good for six.
Baldwin slanted off tackle on
a 46-yard jaunt to the Honker
six-yard line. The Miner full. back pushed over for the score
in two plays and the Nevada
Union fans were breathing
easier.
But — Greg Gomer received
the kickoff for the Honkers,
ran slowly across the field and
found wide open spaces and rambled untouched for an 96-yard
touchdown run. The Honkers led
18-6,
Nevada Union wasn't giving
up. Taking over on their own
34, the Miners marched 66 yards
in seven plays for the score.
A 16-yard pass to Anthney
and a 32-yard ramble by Baldwin moved the Miners to the
‘15. A pass to Charlie Phelps
put Nevada Union on the one
and Mitchell scored on a quarterback sneak.

The Miners took the kickoff
in the second half and started
from the 19, Cheers rose when
Mitchell passed to White on the
first play for a first down to
the 31.
Then came the turning point.
A handoff in the backfield was
fumbled, and the Honkers had
the ball on the Miner 31.
It took 10 plays for Yuba City
to move the 31 yards, Haymore
plunged over on a four down
play for the score. The two
point conversion was made and
the Honkers led 26-12,
The Miners were still alive.
Moving from their 39 Mitchell
went to the air and hit White
twice for seven-and 24-yards,

Yuba City rolls over Nuggets
YUBA CITY — The Nevada
Union Nuggets took the opening
kickoff and marched for atouchdown to take an 8-0 ‘Yead over
the Yuba City Honklets,
~Then the Nugeets kicked off.
They shouldn’ have, because
the Yuba City JV team waltzed
‘9 its sixth straight victory by
rouncing the Nuggets 60-8, It
as Nevada Union's _ third
straight league loss.
The score at halftime was
40-8 and the Honklets’ played
their reserves in the final two
periods. The substitutes continued to roll up the yardage
and the score.
