THE SPACE AGE came to Lyman Gilmore School Thursday when this real Gemini training
capsule arrived on the back of a truck at the early-day airport. Its arrival during lunch period
reportedly caused as much excitement-as_a-real splashdown with hundreds of youngsters watching a large Nevada Irrigation District forklift carefully carry the capsule to the ground. These
two girls came by later for a look of the capsule which was acquired as surplus from the
California Educational Agency to stimulate more interest in science, It will be placed alongside
a cutaway jet engine and a piston engine used in the aerodynamics elective class at Gilmore.
B of A starts regional system
In a top level Bank of America
appointment with local ramifications, Harold M. Schuppert has
‘een named to head the bank's
new regional headquarters in
Sacramento,
The announcement was made
today by President Rudolph A,
Peterson, who described the appointment as "part of a major
organizational change expected
to result in better, faster banking service to our California
customers,"
Schuppert, a vice president
since 1959, will be in complete
charge of the Sacramento-North
Mountain region which includes
B of A branches in Nevada
county. The bank currently operates 96 branches in this area,
The organizational change in
which Schuppert is a key figure
calls for a transfer of overall
control of the bank's 949 branches from San Francisco and Los
Angeles head offices to 12 regional headquarters located in
major metropolitan areas
throughout California.
Although responsibility for
certain branch administrative
functions at Bank of America
has been decentralized since
1964, the new plan entails a more
Significant shift in authority.
"In addition to expanding those
administrative responsibilities
already handled on a decentralized basis, a substantial portion
of the senior credit authority
and staff traditionally centered
-in the bank's head offices will
be placed at the regional echelon,"' Peterson said. The changeover is expected to be completed
by mid-1970,
Peterson termed the new setup "a dramatic change designed
to capitalize on the talents of
our field management and toemPhasize an individual, imaginative approach to the bank's continued progress,"
He cited the growing size and
complexity of California's
economy as the principal reason
for increase specialization along
regional lines.
"There are at least 12 district
geographic markets in this
state,"" he noted. "In order to
keep pace with the expanding
and varied banking needs of
each, we need on-the-spot decision makers who can respond
quickly, and with authority, to
distinctly local conditions."

The net effect of the regional
plan, he observed, is almost
equivalent to creating 12 Bank
of America branch systems all
coordinatéd from an overall
policy standpoint but each having
extensive operating autonomy.
"For the customer," Peterson said, "this will mean faster,
more responsive service. For
the bank it means better information from the field, better
decisions, and greater operating
efficiency,"
As regional vice. presi
Schuppert shoulders haporeent
responsibilities for planning and
for formulation of bank policy.
He will continue to direct the
staff responsible for overall administration of the Bank of
America branches in his region,
