A major fire Saturday night resulted
in more than $20,000 damage to one of
Grass Valley’s 100-year-old Victorian
homes and injuries to several firemen and “
one of the inhabitants of the house.
The 11 p.m. fire occurred at the old
Stewart home, now occupied by Mrs.
Everette Jacks, at the corner of Stewart
and Bank Streets, and is believed to have
broken out in one of the upstairs bedrooms.

with honors from Gunner’s Mate
School at the Coast Guard
Training Center, Governor’s
Island, N.Y.
During the 18-week course, he
received instruction on the
operation and maintenance of
Coast Guard weaponry and
related ordinance equipment.
A 1974 graduate of Nevada
Union High School, he joined the
Coast Guard in February.

Underwood, a native of
Nevada City, started with Bank
of America at the Grass Valley
Office in June, 1956. He subsequently served as an
Operations Officer in the San
Francisco Headquarters in 1968
and also served in Headquarters
as Operations-Personnel Officer
in the Credit Department until
November, 1973. He then went
on an advanced Training.

PETTY THEFTS
Grass Valley Police are investigating two petty thefts
which were reported to. them
Monday. Pacific Gas and
Electric Company reported the
loss of $175 worth of assorted —
tools over the weekend. The

waters and greatly increased concern about noise pollution, it will
