$695,927,000 state-wide
highway budget for fiscal
1963-64 voted Friday by the
California Highway Commission, $39,380,000 has been
allocated to District III in the
Sacramento Valle y-Sierra
Nevada mountain area.
State Division of Highways
officials at the district. office
in Marysville said that $26,
385, 000 of the allocation is
earmarked for construction in
the ll-county district, and
$12,995,000 for acquisition
of rights of way.
A county-by-county
breakdown of the valleymountain district's coming
fiscal budget includes the
following planned projects:
NEVADA COUNTY: Main
item is the $5,455,000 set
up for the base and paving of
the Donner Summit relocation of US 40 (Interstate 80).
The 10 1/2 mile project will
connect with the completed
freeway at Soda Springs on
the west and at Donner Lake
on the east. Grading is now
completed on the west slope,
and should be finished on the
east slope before the end of
the year. The surfacing will
take two more construction
seasons to complete.
For the continuing improvement of Highway 49 between 11/2 miles north of
South Fork Yuba River and
North San Juan, $50,000 was
budgeted. A similar amount
is being spent this summer on
widening and curve improvements on a portion of this

is approximately $19 million
w orth of freeway on US 40
(Interstate 80) between Emigrant Gap and Hampshire
Rocks, an 11 1/2 mile dis‘tance, Part should be finished
next year, andthe remainder
before 1965. Then, US 40
will be four-lane freeway or
expressway throughout the
county. ;
SIERRA COUNTY---The
amount of $365, 000 was budgeted for replacement of the
bridge on Highway 49 across
the North Fork Yuba River in
western Sierra County. The
wider bridge willbe on a new
alignment and together with
its approaches will. total
about 0.4 mile.
For Highway 49 between
Bassetts and Yuba Pass, $100,
000 was votedto widen and
improve the alignmentof
certain portions.
For purchase of rights of
way at various locations,
$10,000 was budgeted.
