Nevada City Elks and their invited guests will re-open
the newly furbished Elks Home with the first party of
the social season on Heldorado Night Saturday,
November 17, 1962. They will be enjoying an entirely new Elks Club after a disastrous fire of nearly two
years ago. Over $50,000 has been spent in improvements.
For 63 years the Elks have been a proud contribution to
the welfare and gaiety of Nevada City with their dedication to Americanism, anonymous needy assistance and
goodclean fun, Aswith many a NC ladies'or men's lodge
they mostly have provided their own entertainment, There
is a general hilarity if inladies' lodges like the Native
Daughters they dress as men in their shows and in
men's lodges as in the Elks, they in their shows dress
as women, This picture was taken way hack in early
1920's when these stalwart NC citizens wound the May
Pole at the Armory Hall for a public benefit then came
back to the Elks Home on Pine St. to meet their wives
and girl friends andto dance the night away, L-R, Thomas
Richards, Charles Leiter, Harry Englebright, John Fortier,
Frank Nilon, Richard Nickless, Richard Goyne, Elza Kilroy, Percival Carr, Edward Uren and James Penrose. I
don't know why they are such a bunch of sour pusses,

Camptonville News
By Irene Stoops
Camptonville "dug out"
Oct. 14 after a four day rain
and wind storm. Total precipitation fer the. storm was
20.83 inches, We were without electricity most of that
time. The power came on
several times--then off it
w ould go--perhaps another
tree blown across the lines.
P,G.&E. crews worked frantically and power was restored Saturday afternoon. The
town water supply was so
thick with mud that it reminded one of a thick mulligan stew--only not as appetizing. There wasno laundry, mopping or even bathing in Camptonville fora few
days. We caught rain water
for cooking and "spit baths".
Wenoticea good many trees
have beentom limb from
limb by the wind and many
residents report leaky roofs.
Sunday the good old sun and
the “€alm after the storm"
were most welcome.

It is said that Marysville
Union High School trustees
are closing the Camptonville
branch of the high school,
and that arrangements are
being made to send the high
schoolstudents, by bus, from
Camptonville to Grass Valley to attend high school
there. Bernard Reimann,

being transferred to Marysville High School.
(Editor's Note: Gerald'Gelatt,
superintendent of the Nevada
Union High School District,
said today that negotiations
are under way on an interdistrict attendance agreement which would permit the
attendance of Camptonville
High School students at Nevada Union High School, At
this time, hgwever, ‘there is
no signed agreement. )
