Special Honor Bestowed
‘Upon Grass Valley Man
On Oct, 25, Reginald A, Bradleyjoneof the only two survivors
of the Frontier Wars, will attain
his 100th birthday. The Department of the Army will conduct
an Honor Award Ceremony for
Bradley at 11:15 a.m. on the
Presidio grounds on Wednesday,
Oct. 25, to be followed by a
luncheon,
’ Bradley, “hale and hearty,"
served in Troop C of the 4th
U. S. Cavalry during the Wars
of the Great Plains, was a Forest Ranger, and spent most
of his life as a cattle rancher
in Modoc, Calif,
He now resides near Grass
Valley, with his daughter and her
husband, Dr, and Mrs. G, Earle
Whitten on Brooks Road,
Bradley's old regiment, the
4th U. S. Cavalry, is now a
component of the lst Infantry
Division fighting in Viet-Nam.
He was mustered out of the
service as a Sergeant at the Presidio on Sept, 10, 1894,
The ceremonies at the Presidio represent a grateful Nation's recognition of Bradley's
service to his country under the
sponsorship of Lt, General Ben
Harrell and with the cooperation
of Gordon R. Elliott, manager of
Northern California's Veterans

Funds Have Been Tagged
For Grass Valley Road
Assemblyman EugeneA. Chappie of the Sixth
District advised the Nevada County Nugget
Tuesday that the State Highway Commission
has authorized the next phase of the NevadaCity-Grass Valley Freeway.
The project will cover a distance of five miles
and will follow from Brunswick Road to the
southern limits of Grass Valley. It includes
construction of the freeway and interchanges
at Brunswick Road, IdahoMaryland Road, South
Auburn Street at the junction of Routes 20 and
49 and also at south-Grass Valley.
Estimated cost of the project is $7,800,000
of which $5,240, 000is budgeted for this phase
in the 1968-69 fiscal year, leaving $2,560,000
tosbe.used for the-1969-70 fiscal year.
Chappie said that the entire project should
be completed at one time, leaving no gaps.
"This will put us in position to advertise in
late November or early December", Chappie
said. "Onthis basis it will offer an opportunity
to begin work in early spring, as soon as the
weather permits.
"Ina large part the acceleration of this project has beenthrough the efforts of the leadership of the two communities", Chappie commented. "And I want to extend my congratulations to these people for their efforts put forth. "
Last Wednesday the Nevada City segment of
the new freeway was dedicated. Over 500 persons turned out to view the official ribboncutting ceremonies, with Assemblyman Eugene
Chappie, county and city officials officiating
in the ribbon-cutting.
