"Mix" and "Match", . .the two calico kittens who recently came to life at my place.. are pretty clever little "con" artists when it comes to getting lots of extra tid-bits to eat. About 6 a.m, daily they start ee ae appeals and prepare a hearty breakfast which they gobble down as tho’ they'd been on a seven-day fast. Then they go outside and engage in sparring matches and other rugged forms of exercise all over the yard. They seem to have built-in clocks in their scheming little heads, because about 30 minutes before I have to leave for work they beg for admittance again. . . .and tell me, in no uncertain terms, that -if they don't get something else to eat they'll do something pretty drastic. While Mix is sitting in front of the refrigerator, cussing me out in lusty cat-language, Match is threatening to ruin my nylons! In self defense, I hastily prepare another ration of food . . « e Which vanishes as tho’ by magic. Their capacity is something to marvel over. .. and it is just as great each evening! xe KK And speaking of cats, several years ago I watched the sevenman Fire Department of asmall town attempt to rescue a cat lodged in the tip-top branches of a 70-foot tree. Neighbors had tried every means at their command to get the cat down to earth, and finally summoned the to finish the job. The men utilized all of the equipment normally used to rescue persons trapped on the upper stories of burning buildings. . got it positioned and sent two of the crew up topside with a large sack, Just as they were within easy reach of the animal, that danged cat decided that he'd had enough of such games. .. and nonchalantly slithered down the tree unaided! Needless -to say, the spectators added quite a few rather colorful words to their vocaublaries. . .as the harried firemen secured their gear and returned to the fire station! Other counties feel pinch of ’* Other counties in Northern California are facing the same problems that affected Nevada General Hospital. A financial crisis, The crisis is a result of the state cutting the payment for long term patients to $14 a day. The cost at Nevada General has been Plumas County, despite a packed house at the supervisors meeting begging them not totake
the step, bas closed its hospital for the aged. The supervisors were faced with losses estimated at $300 per day. The board voted to close the county geriatric hospital on Nov, 15, laying off some 40 workers and tranferring the 30 patients to privately owned hospitals in Quincy. The actual daily cost per patient at the facility was $24 a day. Amador County, in an effort to offset losses from the cutback, is laying off about 15 nurses at its county-operated hospital. The cutbacks will enable the hospital to meet the state's minimum requirements for nursing home care. The cost of per patient day at the hospital was $30 a day. Nevada General has been ordered to reduce costs of care for long term patients. The cost The periencing now. ed rice or egg noodles.. . Most of them rest for the night in French Corral, and it's kind of exciting to watch the cattle pour through the gate into the pasture across from the Wells Fargo building. The highlight for the visitors from the warm -countries was the snow-— fall, the first they had ever seen, HWY. — Grass Valley really amazing how quiet it finally gets, under the circumstances. Every once in a while during the night something will disturb the herd, and a wave of sound passes over and dies away into silence, But it is a pleasant sound, to me, and I hope they never do decide to haul them in trucks. It must be going to be an early winter this year, they are coming out of the mountains ‘so soon, We have seen drives on Thanksgiving Day in other years. This year the cattle have to ford the river, because of the closing of the Bridgeport Bridge. The North San Juan Teen Club had its regular monthly dance Saturday night with live music from a Grass Valley band called Wormwood. Members of the group are Dan Pratt, drummer; Gary Meyer, bass; Joe Schrick, lead guitar; and rhythm guitar played by a boy whose last name I'm sorry to say I couldn't find out, but whose first name is Roman, Also with the band were Gerry Landers and Don Maxwell in charge of equipment, Mike Frazee, photographer, and Virginia Mommi. The dance was held in the Fire Hall, which was North San Juan News. By Idabel Covert decorated in‘a Halloween motif. It is with sadness that I note the passing of Parker Wetzel, my neighbor for the last 10 years, and a very good one. He was 81 years old, and had many interesting stories to tell of the old days on the Ridge, being a native of the area, Report from the San Juan Ridge Union School board of trustees: The firm of Osborne and Stewart, ‘Architects, has been retained to design the new school building, and_ the date of the bond election to make the new school possible is January 18, 1972, This date will be posted in the community soon, Negotiations on the purchase of land are going ahead as fast as possible, The next meeting of the school-board will be November 1, 7:30 p.m., at Columbia Hill School. I must make another correction on the story I wrote about Adele Browning's trip to France. The Clyde Browning of Grass Valley who accompanied her is her son, not her nephew, as erroneously stated. Hope this takes care of everything. * Little Sally, Hedy, and Genie Smith, of Tyler Road, were surprised by their paternal grandparents, Mr, and Mrs. J. D.
