ir and Most Photogenic Bank.” __ Completely new in concept and altogether from tradideparting tional bank architecture, the bank is unique both in design and loca‘tion. Instead of looking like a fort, it ‘more closely resembles a garden a was the exact in of the architects, Skidmo: Owings & Merrill, ” It is a perfect circle, 70 feet in diameter, with walls of clear plate glass and an accordionPleated. roof sneathed. with copper, It is friendly and open, designed ‘to appeal rather than to impress. Everything inside the bank’ was specially. created to sustain this effect, : There are no teller cages, as _ such. Instead, there is a long, low counter, custom designed to reduce to a minimum the separation of customers and the bank's staff. All machines are relegated to a curved work counter immediately behind the tellers, leaving . the main counter with only the few things the teller needs ‘to serve the public. Still anothr innovation is the arrangement by which thé teller jocks up his coin at the counter at night instead of sending it downstairs to the vault. Designed primarily to be good looking’ and to create a friendly feeling; the teller system is such that more. tellers occupy less Space without . cramping, cute ever -before. In the center of the bank’s roof, ‘which has no supports to clutter the interior, is a Gothic rose window fashioned out of steel. Covered by a clear glass’ skylight, the rose casts a highlight-andshadow pattern that travels across the bank floor with the movement of the sun. The interior color scheme is Use Parking Lights Only For Parking It is illegal to use parking lights as driving lighths, warns the California Highway Patrol. The California Vehicle Code provides that no-vehicle shall be driven at any time with the parking lamps lighted except when the lamps are being used as turn ‘signal lamps, declared Bradford’ M. Crittenden; commissioner of the patrol. “This language is _ perfectly clear, yet many motorists continue to drive at dusk, dawn and in fog with only their parking lamps burning,” he asserted. “Not only is this practice. illegal, it is dangerous. Too many accidents occur because one driver didn’t see another car approaching or because he misjudged the speed at which the car was traveling. Using parking lamps as head lamps contributes to theses accidents.” The.patrol ‘commissioner also urged motorists to check their automobile lights frequently to see that they are working properly. Broken or burned-out tail lights and stop lights are responsible for many rear-end collisions that would otherwise not have happened, he declared. puuailadaiaalancaiesct SHIFT ON THE GO! with Ford Select-0-Speed see your FORD TRACTOR DEALER ‘ . ioceieiecaciaee il Sag eenar are con _ title of “World’s Most. Distinctive poare other detail, Lighting comes from 110 custom ceiling fixures, cylindrically shaped and arranged in concentric intersecting circles, A spectacular backdrop for the bank is the 20-story glass-andmosaic Crown Zellerbach Building, scheduled for opening later in the year. The two’ structures share a one}. and one-third acre park plaza ‘pounded by Market, Sansome, Bush, and Battery Streets in. downtown San Francisco, An oasis of quiet and beauty in a busflnig downtown neighborhood, the plaza has nothing to compare with it in the West. There are 25 mature trees, slate walks, a fountain, paving of round black two-inch pebbles set in mortar, ground cover of wild strawberry and ivy, and benchés so that the public can sit and enjoy the garden. And all of this is set well below the street level to give passérsby a view of the entire: plaza. WHAT'S . WHERE LOS ANGELES By GERALD WALLACE One of the sighs to see in Souhern California is the “Landmark Lamp” in the Alexandria Hotel. You will find it in the heart of downtown Los Angeles at Fifth and Spring Streets. _ Brought from Spain, this mag. nificent brass lamp of white and gold lighter the romantic nights of the movie moguls in the ’teens and twenties.” Hanging in the Indian Grill it drew admiring comments from Douglas Fairbanks, Qharlie Chaplin, Sarah Bernhardt, Enrico Caruso, Franklin D. Adjacent to ‘he lounge, you will find one of the busiest lobbies in the Southland. Greeting guests, you will see Art Green and John Daniels. The Korea GI Bill allows a veteran to change his cours¢ of study just once—no more. The new law gives a liberalized definition of just what is meant by a change of course. Under ths law (Public Law 86150), a veteran now may move from one GI course to another— where’ the first “is prerequisite to, or generally required for” the second—without being charged with his oneand-only change of course, For example, a veteran may set out in GI training with the objective of getting an AB degree. Later he decides he wants’ to
becomes a lawyer. Now he may switch to law studies, without it counting as a course change. The reason is that his work toward; his AB degree “is prerequisite to’ his study of law. Before the new law was enacted, the VA had no.choice but to charge a veteran with a change of course, even if his first coufse of study was prerequisite to his second. Then, if the veteran wanted to change again, he could not; .he had used up his right to a single change. “3 project. “Through the courtesy of Mr. and Mrs. H: Ted Schaps, two medals were given 4-Hers. According to British researchers, one of the most remarkable features is that an oil and air filled sac surrounds the ear of the whale and the dolphin. They report that recent experiments show. the sac _ pevents sound from reaching the ear except through the ear canal and is resporisible for the marked ability of whales and dolphins te tell sound directions.
