SACRAMENTO = Planning is
in full swing for two conferences
next month in which thousands
of young people and adults will
formulate an official state position on the myriad problems of
children and youth.
Both conferences will be held
on the same days -Nov, 10
. and 11, One will be held in Sacramento for Northern California
“counties andthe other, for Southern California counties, will be

The conferences were called
by Governor Reagan as a means
of formulating recommendations
on such problems as drugs,
campus unrest, jobs, education,
family relationships and other
issues facing the young people
of California and the nation.
The recommendations will
provide the basis for California's participation in the 1970
White House Conference on Children and Youth. White House
Conferences have been called
by U. S. presidents every 10
years since the days of,President Theodore Roosevelt. They
are a nationwide gathering of
young people and adults from all
parts of the nation to discuss
and deal with the problems of
children and youth,
_The -1970 White House Conferences will revolve around
five issue papers which are
being prepared from testimony
at eight fact-finding hearings
which were held around the
state last July, and from material submitted by. the counties
and varous component agencies.
The issue papers will deal with
education, health, changing
values, justice for children and
youth, and economics of living.
Planning for the two conferences is under the direction
of the Governor's Advisory
Committee on Children and
Youth,;<®@ group of some 35 citizens from all parts of California who advise the Governor on
youth and children's problems,

Assemblyman Gene ‘Chappie
announced today that he is inviting young men in his district
to apply for nomination as candidates for his appointment to
the California Maritime Academy.
Under the provisions of the
California Senate Concurrent
Resolution #81 of 1955, each
State Senator and State Assemblyman representing an evennumbered district has an appointment. available to the Academy for the class entering in
August 1970,

such nominees in the entrance
competition, if in all respects
qualified, will become the ap‘ pointee from the 6th Assembly
District. ‘

be made from among Assemblyman Chappie's nominees depending on their relative standings in the general entrance

The State-operated California
Maritime academy is located in
Vallejo on the north shore ofthe

three-year period of residence
the Academy trains. and educates young men as officers of
the American Merchant Marine.
The graduate receives his federal license as a Third Officer.
