Another favorite candy that isseldom made at home is lollipops. After you tackle the apples-on-a-stick, perhaps you will want to try your hand at lollipops. Get ready for a treat, kids! During his more than 28 years with the Marine Band as an instrumentalist and director, Col. Schoepper has had an opportunity to perform for young people in every state of the Union, Having gained with such experience a wealth of knowledge to guide him in programming matinee concerts, he has chosen a truly outstanding matinee program to be played in Grass Valley's Veteran's Memorial Auditorium. ‘From the moment Col, Schoepper gives the downbeat for the "Stars and Stripes Forever" and the first notes of Sousa's American classic fill the auditorium, it will be immediately evident that here is an organization whose fame is nurtured by polished professionalism, militar y precision #&@d virtuosity of the highest order. Turning from the march form to that of the overture, the Marine Band next presents a delightful work by Felix Mendelssohn. The “Overture for Band" is characterized by the elegance and spontaneity always associated with the name of that composer. One of the highlights of the program will be the solo presentation by Trombonist James Erdman, a young man possessing highly gifted musical endowments, Although yOung in years, Jamescan claim "veteran status” insofar as concert performance is concerned, This marks his sixth year as a soloist on the band's annual concert tours, His solo, "Thoughts of Love” is one requiring a‘ complete mastery in all aspects of trombone technique. Gilbert and Sullivan "Circa 1950" will follow the afternoon's first soloist as Col. Schoepper has chosen a ballet suite based-on the Operetta music of Sir Arthur
Sullivan, compiled and artangedby the young Australian composer Charles Mackerras, "Pineapple Poll” was given its first performance by the Sadlers Wells in 1951, and the suite itself is comprised of the opening ballet scene, Jasper's Dance, Poll's Dance, and the ballet Finale, The band's clarinet section is considered one of the finest ensembles found in symPhonic bands today. Most assuredly the section warrants a "solo spot" on the afternoon's programand fills it admirably with the Paganini "Perpetual Motion," That the clarinets will be extremely busy for a few moments might be evidenced in the factthatthe "Perpetual Motion” requires the playing of alittle more than nine hundred notes per minute, or fifteen notes each second. Not to be outdone, the cornets answer the challenge with Leroy Anderson's breathtaking “Bugler's Holiday." The popularity of the piece tends to obscure the musicianship and impeccable ensemble required of the inStrumentalists in the performance, A wonderful era in the life of our nation willbe recalled in the minds of the listeners as the Marine Band plays Morton Gould's wonderful musical portrait of the American Cowboy, "Cowboy Rhapsody, " By this time the audience will have become well acquainted with the Marine Band's personable concert moderator, William Jones, and will delight in his exceptionally rich and powerful voice as he assumes the additional role of vocalsoloist. His gifted baritone will be heard in the broagly humorous aria, “La Calunnia” from the "Barber of SanFranciscoheld its first civic election on December 7, 1834, when DonFrancisco de Harowas elected Alcalde of the new pueblo of Yerba Buena. Band To Present Varied Program ‘ Seville, " As their final selection, Col, Schoepper and the Marine Band will present a salute to one of thegreat names of the American musical scene with the “Jerome Kern Fantasy. " The matinee program will also include, as encores, some of the world's bestknown and most popular marches, Col. Schoepper has constructed this well-balanced program with the thought foremost in mind of maintaining a proper balance be= tween the entertaining and instructional, Students attending the matinee will not only enjoy thrilling entertainment, but will receive liberal cultural enlightenment as well, Many will leave the auditorium resolving tocontinue their musical studies in’earnest, hoping to qualify for membership in such an organization. Tickets for both concerts, sponsored by Nevada County 4-H Club Council, may be obtained at Alpha Hardware inGrass Valley, and Frank's Barber Shop, Nevada City.
