Celeste Holm
starts series
Celeste Holm, well known
actress of stage, screen and
television, will open the fourth
season of A.M., a series of five
morning programs held in
Oroville.
Miss Holm will give a talk
entitled, ‘‘More than meets the
eye,” Oct. 16 in the State
Theater. The morning programs
begin at 10 a.m. sponsored by
Omega Nu. Members of the
Oroville chapter, Alpha Beta,
actas hostesses at the box office
and for the coffee hour which
precedes the program.
Omega Nu will host a luncheon at Prospector’s Village at
100n Oct. 16 in honor of Miss
Holm. For information concerning the A.M. programs,

The September meeting of the
Nevada County Chapter of the
American’ Association of
Retired Persons was_ held
Wednesday, at Grass Valley’s
Veterans Building with
President Earl Covey presiding.
The guest speaker was Mrs.
Barbara Sailor. Her subject was
the history and operation of the
Nevada County Community
Workshop. Mrs. Sailor stated
that to continue the evaluating
and developing of the work
potential of the retarded adults
requires a steady and reliable
source of money. A thrift shop is
being organized with this aim.
Also there will be an organ
recital on October 12th, at 8
o’clock at the Veterans Building.
All proceeds will be turned over
to the workshop.
Vice-president David Laird
made available to the county to
develop a_ transportation
system. Auburn has a similar
system started by using the
available funds, it is now on its
own and operating successfully.
The Board of Supervisors
appointed Tom Coleman
chairman to bring about the
same advantage for Grass
Valley and Nevada City.
The 9th District Workshop and
Regional Conference was held in
San Francisco recently and
attended by the Coveys and the
Lairds. The AARP with a
membership of five and a half
million does an effective job at
the national level to combat
inflation and improve conditions

for the older citizen. Reports of
the workshop were presented by
Earl Covey, David Laird, and
Mrs. Laird.
Mrs. Madge Cummings was
appointed the new Program
Committee chairman.
The October meeting will be
held on the 4th Wednesday of the
month, guest speaker will be
Sgt. John Berrymen, the subject
“Crime _ Prevention’’. The
nominating of new officers will
also be on the agenda.
After the meeting,
refreshments were served by
Mrs. Lola Holtzman and her
committee.

Kentucky Flat 4-H Club had
their monthly club meeting on
Sept. 19. 5
Ten new members were
present, also three new leaders,
Mr. and Mrs. Blomberg and
Mrs. Hallinger.
Each member told about their
enteries in the county fair. Janet
Maddox won the food preservation trophy, Kitty Morgan
won the food preparation
trophy, Mike Morgan won the
electric trophy. Our booth won
third prize. ;

to be away from
home for a week or
more, set your water
heater to “pilot.” This

burner from heating

Gas Rarige:. Before lighting a
pilot on your gas range, be sure
all burners are turned off. Check
your owner’s manual for the
location of the pilot and touch

Water Heater: The main
burner on a modern gas water
heater will not operate if
the pilot goes out. To relight
a water heater, set the control to “pilot” and follow
manufacturer’s instructions.
