N.C. Chamber chief resigns The office of president of the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce was declared vacant Monday following a special session called by the president to answer charges leveled at him when he was not present. Will Howard categorically answered the charfges and said he would not resign his office to “save face." Directors privately had asked him to step down. He had been accused of creating unrest between the chamber and the city council. He admitted to "raising cain" with the city council because of their lack of action in drafting and enforcing a historical ordinance, However, he said there was no ill will and he had been thanked after the ordinance was passed. In answer to a claim that he violated his position by speaking on issues at meetings, he said he felt it necessary. He-said so few directors participated he found it necessary to speak in order that both sides of controversial issues be fully aired. Howard contended that he was familiar with "Roberts Rules of Order," but argued that he didn't believe they were important ina "small town" and that he was not going to "rock the boat" by observing them. Directors were critical of Howard for taking petitions to merchants regarding their wishes concerning removing parking meters. They claimed he acted without knowledge or approval of directors, Howard said his petitions showed an overwhelming majority of the merchants wished the meters removed and "whether I remain president you have a mandate-and should go to the city council and fight."" : Howard contended he had bee elected when "no one else would take the job." He said he felt that he had been a working president and had accomplished a great deal, However, he stated if it were the will of the majority he would step down. The meeting was turned over to George Brooks, vice presi‘ dent, after the seven directors present voted unanimously to accept. Howard's resignation, Director Roy Stauffer expressed appreciation for Howard's efforts and the things he has accomplished. He asked Howard to remain active saying each person has a function in the chamber. Stauffer admired Howared's refusal to "bow out on any false pretense." Howard said he intended to stay on the board and serve, The next regular meeting will be held at noon Monday in the city hall. only at corners. The child who runs into the street suddenly or who darts out from between parked cars, is in grave danger because many times the driver cannot stop in time to prevent a tragedy. The CSAA added that pedesy trian accidents involving children would be greatly reduced if parents would emphasize two basic safety rules to their children: 1, Cross only at corners or Within approved crosswalks, 2. Play away from traffic. Parents should also set a good example by observing all pedestrian safety rules themselves, the CSAA reminded.
