Employes get voting break Director Albert C. Beeson of the Department of Industrial Relations today urged all employers and employees to check up on voting plans for November 5, to be sure legal requirements are met for necessary time off without loss of pay. Many employees do not realize that the law requires advance notice by the employee of Under the provisions of Elections Code, Sections 14400. and 14401, when necessary the employee is. entitled to arrive late to work or to leave early in order to vote, but he must give advance notice of at least two working days to his employer that he will need the time to reach his polling place. He may take up to two hours of working time without loss of pay and adhis intentions to take time off ditional necessary time without from employment for voting. pay, O KNOW \NSTON... JESSE M. UNRUH California State Assembly Speaker... On May 14, 1964, the Associated Press and the ‘United Press International reported that Democrat State Assembly Speaker Jesse M. Unruh stepped into the legislative controversy over the appraisers who were appointed by State Controller Alan Cranston. Unruh said: “Inheritance tax appraisers are one of the most corrupting influences in California politics today.”’ The following week Unruh called on Cranston to answer the charge of a former state inheritance tax appraiser that the controller sold the jobs for $5,000 campaign contributions. The Associated Press reported that Unruh offered to open his own campaign financial records and challenged Cranston to debate the sources of his political funds. NEGRO PUBLIC OFFICIALS May, 1964... In a joint press release reported by the United Press International in May of 1964, four Negro public officials charged. that Alan Cranston pretended to favor the civil rights program while taking the opposite position in the operation of his office as California State Controller. Making the accusation, according to United Press International, were the Hon. Gilbert Lindsay and Billy G. Mills, Los Angeles City Councilmen, and the Hon. F. Douglas Ferrell and Mervyn M. Dymally, Los Angeles Assemblymen. They said: “Cranston does not visibly have one member of any minority group on his Sacramento capitol staff while other state office holders do.” OAKLAND TRIBUNE EDITORIAL October 17, 1968... Alan Cranston’s record as a public official does not inspire confidence. As State Controller during the eight years of the Brown administration, he was a party to the excessive spending and fiscal irresponsibility that brought California to the brink of bankruptcy. This year the eventful day will be Nov. 12, At last Tuesday's CWA meeting Rough , and Ready ladies planned a spaghetti luncheon complete with green salad and apple cake for the group. Mrs. Mary Moneta, CWA Chairman, will prepare her delicious spaghetti sauce. Put a red line around the date. All grange women and their guests are welcome, There is a Swiss steak and apple pie public dinner planned for Saturday Nov. 9. Better circle this one, too, Also circle Nov, 10.-That's the next Sunday afternoon public party at 1:30 p.m. The ladies meeting last Tuesday heard a convention report by Mrs. Marguerite Abbott, planned new dining room curtains, and enjoyed their beautiful new kitchen cupboards. Mrs, Mary O'Neal is planning a vacation to Hawaii in November. Besides seeing all of the islands, Mary plans to enjoy the leisurely luxurious life of a shipboard cruise both going and for her return trip. * *K *K Mrs. Alice Perry just returned from a month inthe north woods, She spent her vacation (mostly fishing) with her daughter Mrs. Andy Mueller at Ruth Lake somewhere in the Trinity Alps. * * * Mr. George Ross, for many years a resident of Rough and Ready, has "retired" to Cloverdale. Mr. Ross has an older brother, two sisters, a bevy of nieces and some nephews in Cloverdale so he is right at home, * ok OK At the family potluck dinner arranged by the fire dept. auxiliary for last Monday, the St. Patrick's Church Folk Singers entertained with their splendid music, The folk singers are a group of about 20 fine young mixed voices, One of these voices belonged to Kirk Pharis, a young man from our own community. Their only accompaniment was a guitar. They sang several numbers — all religious but with a definite toe-tapping rhythm. Father Ryle, who has a splendid voice himself, directs the group. * Ok * Miners Clothesline #3, which hung-over Broad St. near the old fire house in Nevada City as part of the July 4 decorations, was awarded a "Special" award. We just received our nice "Special" ribbon. The line was entered by the chamber of commerce and the old patchwork quilt, long black stockings, red nightshirt and "long Johns" and miscellaneous other interesting items were provided by members of the community. * * Rough and Ready is having an anniversary on Nov, 1. On this same date in 1965 the replica of the Great Republic of Rough and Ready Flag, which was usedin the Death Valley TV series about Rough and Ready, was presented to the community, Producer Joe Santley of Channel 13 presented the flag to Charles Deardorf who accepted for Chamber President Robert Miller in a ceremony at the community flag pole. Participating in the ceremony were "old timers" Maud Calvert, "Kate" Loney, Manuel Alameda and Manuel Frank and a singing group from the Ready Springs School. * * The Jack Bixlers had as dinner guests last Friday night Bill and Lois Sherwood who are leaving our beautiful area to make their home in Arizona. * ok FRANKLIN D.
