JESSE M. UNRUH
California State Assembly Speaker...
On May 14, 1964, the Associated Press and the
‘United Press International reported that Democrat
State Assembly Speaker Jesse M. Unruh stepped
into the legislative controversy over the appraisers who were appointed by State Controller Alan
Cranston. Unruh said: “Inheritance tax appraisers
are one of the most corrupting influences in California politics today.”’ The following week Unruh
called on Cranston to answer the charge of a former state inheritance
tax appraiser that the controller sold the jobs for $5,000 campaign
contributions. The Associated Press reported that Unruh offered to
open his own campaign financial records and challenged Cranston
to debate the sources of his political funds.
NEGRO PUBLIC OFFICIALS
May, 1964...
In a joint press release reported by the United Press International in
May of 1964, four Negro public officials charged. that Alan Cranston
pretended to favor the civil rights program while taking the opposite
position in the operation of his office as California State Controller.
Making the accusation, according to United Press International, were
the Hon. Gilbert Lindsay and Billy G. Mills, Los Angeles City Councilmen, and the Hon. F. Douglas Ferrell and Mervyn M. Dymally, Los
Angeles Assemblymen. They said: “Cranston does not visibly have
one member of any minority group on his Sacramento capitol staff
while other state office holders do.”
OAKLAND TRIBUNE EDITORIAL
October 17, 1968...
Alan Cranston’s record as a public official does not inspire confidence. As State Controller during the eight years of the Brown
administration, he was a party to the excessive spending and fiscal
irresponsibility that brought California to the brink of bankruptcy.

At the family potluck dinner
arranged by the fire dept. auxiliary for last Monday, the St.
Patrick's Church Folk Singers
entertained with their splendid
music, The folk singers are a
group of about 20 fine young
mixed voices, One of these
voices belonged to Kirk Pharis,
a young man from our own
community. Their only accompaniment was a guitar. They sang
several numbers — all religious
but with a definite toe-tapping
rhythm. Father Ryle, who has
a splendid voice himself, directs the group.
