In Sierra Past GRASS VALLEY---The playing of aSierra College-Napa College football game at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley Saturday night recalled to Athletic Director How ard'"Woody" Woodside the names of past gtidders from the Nevada County area who played for the Wolverines. Leading the list of notable past Sierra gridders from Grass Valley and Nevada City isthe head coach of the Wolverines himself. Homer "Buzz" Ostrom not only played for the Wolverines, but came back to coach them five years ago after successfulcoaching at Nevada Union High School and Placer High. Ostrom is not the only coach in the area who once played for the Wolverines. Coaches Jim Gwinn and Stu Smith of NUHS, Bob Bonner of Del Oro and Ben Barry of junior high school coaching ranks also are ex-W olverines. Colfax Principal Ken Sahl also played on the '45 Sierra eleven, along with Dick Boundy, Bonner, Ostrom, GinoBattista, Barry and Don Davis. Coaching the Wolverines as “student coaches” this semester are Rex “Butch” Chappell, an all-time great Wolverine, and Jim Gray, both Grass Valley lads. Both played last year along with Bud Journey, Pat Cummings and Ken Crowder. Members of the '60 team included Bob Winkle, Bill Hooper, Jim Moore, Jim Kirkham and Bill Lowe. Bill Boundy, Harry Chappell, Tom Fisher, Bob Gilfillan and Max Miller, along with Warren Scribner and Jerry Wasley, competed on the ‘59 squad. In ‘58, Nevada County gridders included Jim Willis, MikeDay, Wayne Brooks(now Loyalton coach) Lorn Jenkins, Bill Gray, Boundy and Fisher. Going back in history a bit, the 1954 roster included the names of Bill Bosworth, Paul Halvorson and Roger Montre. Nuggets Win 25-12 In Nevada SPARKS, Nev. ---The Nevada Union Junior Varsity walloped the Sparks team by a score of 25 -12 Friday night. Kent Grant was first to yards for a touchdown with three minutes left in the first quarter, Rusty Lain ran for the conversion, and the quarter ended 7-0. The second quarterwas as successful as the first for the Nuggets. Kent Grant again scored from 15 yards out bringing the score to 13-0. Sparks then drove down the field and Ron Picou ran foraTD. The first half ended 13-6. In the third period, NU again scored as fullback Lain smashed through the line for another touchdown. The conversion was no good and the quarter ended 19-6, In the final period Bob Maginnis, of the Sparks team, made for a TD from NU's 30 yard line, making it 12 for Sparks and 19 for the Nuggets. The final score was made by Brian Haley who received a pass from Grant in the end zone, bringing the score to 20 212. Xmas Mail SAN FRANCISCO---Al1though Christmas Day is two months away, it's not too early to begin thinking about the mailing of gifts and cards which add to the pleasure of the happy observance, RaymondR. Miners Lose At Sparks SPARKS, Nev. ---The Varsity of Nevada Union lost to the Sparks Railroaders by a score of 14-7. All in all the game was anybody's to the last as both teams compiled more than their share of penalties throughout the entire game, The Miners lost 55 yards while the Railroaders managedtorack up 75 yards in penalties. In the first quarter Sparks scored after six plays as Wally Pritchard received a lateral, and ran for the first touchdown. The conversion was good andthe first quarter ended 7-0. Inthe second quarter, the Miners could not penetrate the Railroader's defense and after considerable penalties on both sides, the first half ended, as did the first quarter, Sparks leading 7-0. Nevada Union received the second-half kick off and six plays later a pass intended for Bob Thomas was intercepted and Sparks was stopped on the NU 40 yard line. T he Railroaders eventually drove tothe two yard line as the third quarter ended. On the first play of the last period, Sparks dove for another TD and made the extra point. With the score standing at 14-0, the Miners pushed through the host's defense and Mark Paye threw a pass to Bob Thomas for NU's first score. The conversion kick by Parsons was good and the score was brought upto 14-7, Timeran out on the Miners, however, andthe game ended with S parks victorious. The next game will be at the Nevada County Fairgrounds against the Roseville Tigers. Marysville Trounces NU Cagers GRASS VALLEY---The Cee and Dee basketballteams . both lost last Tuesday, when they played Marysville, The Dees lost 25-13 and the Cees were beaten 41-19, Although the NU teams were badly . beaten they should not feel too bad, as Marysville has not lost a leagué game this season. GRASS VALLEY ---The Nevada UnionTrack team again won top honors in the meet } with Roseville Wednesday. The A's tookthe first four places with Ernie McQueen taking first, Ray Meister second, Bob Messick, third, and Marc Kirshman fourth. Ken Miller was sixth and Bob McBurney came in seventh, The Bees ran a fine race, with Dave Kennedy coming in second, Dan Bertoncini, third, BillBursill, sixth, Alan Brown, seventh, Ed Espinosa, eighth, Marshall Harrison, ninth, Selmer Wathney, tenth, Rick Zunino, eleventh, and Mike O'Conner, twelfth. Although the Cees lost point wise, they nevertheless ran better than average, Sophomore Tim Ellison came in first, setting his fourth course record of the year. Ken Green took fifth while Dave Bailey was sixth, and in a Golden Valley Conference game played at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley Saturday night. The first college game played on the field was witnessed by approximately 750 persons. Butch Enkoji, a sophomorefrom Loomis who has played every position in the Sierra ‘backfield, scored the first time he got his hands on the ball in both the first and sec‘the win. After Sierra's defense had stopped Napa on the opening ‘kickoff series of downs, Sierta got the ball on the Napa: 38 on a poor Kick. Enkoji broke off guard, twisted through the Napa secondary and went the 38 yards to paydirt. Try for atwo pointer by Dale Bunch was no good. With 23'seconds left in the first quarter, defensive halfbackJohn Carney intercepted a Napa pass and romped 23 yardsto another TD, Hank DeMello's pass to Gary Cox failed. Score at halftime was 12-0. Enkoji took the second half kickoff and raced 85 yards to a touchdown behind excellent team blocking. DeMello again failed to hit Cox with a conversion pass and the score stood 18-0. The first Democratic NatLeon Anthony was seventh. Hunting Take Down In County SACRAMENTO ---Hunters in Nevada County during the first 27 days of the deer season have taken 639 bucks, less than the 690 at this time last year, and down from the five year average of 755.
