Bennetts was for many years owner of Bennetts’ Bootery in Grass Valley and Nevada City and was a life-long resident of this area, He was a veteran of World War I and past commander of the local American Legion Post. He was also a member of Native Sons of the Golden West and active in the Odd Fellows Lodges, Survivors include the wife, Mary, of Grass Valley; two daughters, Mrs, Frank (Beatrice) Fredericks: of Grass Valley and Mrs, Marilyn Sutherland of Reno, Also five grandchildren and two sisters, Pearl Croft of Australia and Rita Curnow of Nevada City, Meeting Postponed The reguiar October meeting of the Licensed Vocational Nurses will be delayed until further notice, Mrs, Rector, the daughter of pioneer parents and a lifetime resident of Nevada City, was born March 30, 1884, the daughter of William G, and Mary Richards. Her father was-a rancher and local businessman, She was a graduate of Nevada City public schools and attended the University of California MRS. RUTH RECTOR Her late husband was the son of John Rector, who with his brother founded the NevadaCounty Bank, which in later years became the Nevada City Branch of the Bank of America, The brothers also had owned and operated the famed National Hotel shortly after it was built, Mrs, Rector and her husband had lived for a time in the hotel, but early in their married life moved into their Nevada Street home, a Victorian showplace, which they purchased from Dr. Edgar Hunt, a pioneer physician in this community. It is well known for its iron deer and dog on the front lawn, She was always a most gracious hostess, and had loaned her home for benefit house tours and had insisted that commitments be kept even after she became ill, Mrs, Rector, a prominent vocalist in her younger years had appeared in many performances at the old Nevada Theater. She was active in Trinity Episcopal Church affairs and a onetime member of the choir. She once won the coveted honor of serving as "Goddess of Liberty" in the Nevada City Annual Fourth of July Parade, Survivors include a son, Dr. E, William Rector of Sacramento, Mrs, John L, (Margaref) Larue of. Nevada City, and Mrs, Ruth Ray of Orinda, Also a sister, Mrs. Marian Libbey of Nevada City. Firemen Answer Call Nevada City firemen were called to the home of James H, Bonney on Park Avenue, Tuesday night in response to an alarm caused by an overheated electric water heater. Firemen said the safety device failed, burned wires inside and destroyed the heater. Funds Approved WASHINGTON--The military construction bill approved by the Senate Armed Services Committee Thursday included $336,000 for Beale AFB located between Grass Valley and Marysville, a a RE Teacher (Con't from pg. 1) A motion was made to grant Halcomb a temporary certificate, "until his name be cleared or justice prevail." It passed by a 3-2 vote, six of the seven members of the board being present; but the vote was later ruled invalid by Counsel Todd, because according to law, it did not constitute a quorum of the entire board, George Bryant, principal of Hennessy School, where Halcomb has taught in the past, made the first move for some explanation from law enforcement agencies, "T ask at this time that the law enforcement of. Nevada County state whether Mr, Halcomb has done something to prevent him from being in close contact with your children and mine. I do not feel I could return him to a school over which I administer as long as he is under a cloud." Todd later told those in attendance at a special meeting that there is a problem in obtaining the facts, "Your law enforcement agencies are in dispute as to facts surrounding the incident," he said, However, Todd said, "As far as I know, the grand jury is not considering any indictment against Mr, Halcomb," The board unanimously voted to notify Sheriff Wayne Brown and Dist, Atty. Harold A, Berliner by certified mail, asking them to issue public reports on Daniel Halcomb's role, or lack of it in the marijuana raid, Tuesday morning, the Nevada
County Nugget called both the sheriff and the district attorney. Sheriff Brown said that he had received the request and was preparing a statement, but doubted that it would be ready in time for the Nugget's deadline, District Attorney Berliner said that the request was delivered to him by hand, and that he, too, was preparing a statement, but that it would be directed to the school trustees first, before being made public. In the meantime, Fellersen has notified newsman that the county board is not likely to hold another special session on the Halcomb case "unless there is sufficient reason to cause them to meet." County Receives SACRAMENTO—State Controller Houston I. Flournoy today announced the distribution of $51,114,727 among the state, cities, and counties as the July apportionment of highway users taxes, $31,080.76. A total of $10,482,016 went directly to the counties; $6,708,490 to the State Highway Fund for Counties and Cities; $4,677,591 to the State Highway Fund for Cities; and $29,246,630 for expenditure on state highways, The total was derived.from the following sources: gasoline tax, $45,153,298; diesel fuel tax, $3,512,603; by transfer from the Share Motor Vehicle Transportation Tax Fund, $1,218,840; and the balance from miscellaneous sources, — Rescue Car The Nevada City rescue car was summoned Sunday afternoon to the Rome Power House Road beyond Cement Hill near Nevada City to the aid of a San Ramone man who was injured when he was riding a horse, Ted Segourney, rescue car attendant, said that Robert Mardian, 28, and a friend were riding horses side by side when his friend's mount bolted and bucked, kicking Mardian's shin, LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS COUNTY OF NEVADA STATE OF CALIFORNIA Regular Meeting September 26, 1967, Present: Theo. Kohler, Jr., Co, Clerk, Leo J, Todd, County Counsel, The meeting was called to order at 10:00 A.M, and all Supervisors were noted as being present, The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as presented, The Chairman was authorized to sign the Claims Register, thereby releasing the following Warrants for payment: FUND NO, AMOUNT Enterprise #300 #313 $ 574,40 Road #252 #276 5, 429.74 Capital Outlay #13 #14 3, 770,32 General #1,202 #1,329 3, 778,42 The Hospital Administrator appeared before the Board, and a discussion ensued and the Certification of County Indigents was consolidated within the Social Services Department, The Chairman of the Board was authorized to endorse a $1,000.00 check, from the California State Fair, to the Nevada County Chamber of Commerce, Subject check was for our Recreational Exhibit at the State Fair sponsored by the County Chamber. The Auditor-Controller presented the following business: 1, Mr, Trauner reported to the Board, in answer to his Minute Order to investigate the parking problem, As a result, certain rearranging of parking spaces was performed underneath the Courthouse Annex, to provide parking spaces: for the Supervisors, and the County Counsel was directed to prepare an Ordinance, restricting the parking behind the Nevada County Veterans Building in Nevada City, for 22 parking spaces for Co. employees, 4 spaces for Dept. of Public Works personnel and 6 parking spaces for building tenants, 2. The Board adopted Ordinance No, 380 (An Ordinance adding to the Authorized Personnel of the County, the position of Asst, Supt. of the Juvenile Hall, and taking the positions of Supt. and Matron of the Juvenile Hall from the Exempt Service of the County, and placing them within the Classified Service of the County). The County Counsel presented the following proposed documents, which were adopted by the Board; Resolution 67-231 (A Resolution accepting a Grant Deed from Donald and Loretta Truax). Resolution 67-232 (A Resolution accepting a Grant Deed from Marcel and Margaret Cadoref). Resolution 67-283 (A Resolution authorizing an Agreement between the Co, of Nevada and the Calif, Highway Patrol, pertaining to space for the Co. of Nevada radio equipment, to be placed in the Calif. Highway Patrol's radio vault on Ski-Tow Hil). Mr, Pat O'Brien appeared before the Board, regarding placement of signs within the County right-of-ways, The County Counsel was directed to prepare on Ordinance, stating that no signs will be placed on County rights-of-ways, with the exception of public _ entities, The Director of the Department of Public Works appeared and presented Resolution 67-234 (A Resolution determining the desirability of requesting allocation of funds from Public Utilities Commission, for construction of safety devices at Boca Crossing) which was adopted, The Clerk was directed to advertise for applicants for the position of Public Defender at a salary of $800.00 per month, part-time, effective November 1, 1967, The Planning Director appeared and presented the Final Map of Western Lake Properties Unit No, 2-C, and the Chairman was authorized to sign the Final Map, and the Board adopted Resolution 67-235 (A Resolution approving the Subdivision Improvement Agreement and Bond). Tie following men were appointed as Directors of the Nevada County Soil. Conservation District: George Dyer; Lorin Trubschenck; James Vendley. The Board adopted Resolution 67-236 (A Resolution accepting the Certification of Inspection of the Department of Public Works, and authorizing the Chairman to sign the Notice of Completion of Magnolia Road, The Board adjourned for lunch at 12:00 P.M. AFTERNOON SESSION: The Board reconvened at 1:30 P.M, as the Board of Equalization, with all Supervisors present, The following Tax Protests were hear, and reductions in assessment were issued to the following individuals: Hilton Partington; Hazel Ivey; Clifford DeBerry; Ervin Brodehl; and Joe Day, Sr. The following Tax Protests were dismissed, for lack of appearance of the applicants: Norman Clark and Andrew Schneider, The following Tax Protests were continued until October 3, 1967: Don Batcheller and Robert Darm.
