SACRAMENTO -Now that the mad-rush vacation season
is over, many a wise Californian is planning one or more leisurely outings during the off-season. If that person is you,
rs State Department of Parks and Recreation has good news
or you,
Instead of paying $3 or $4 a night for camping at a state
park, beach, or recreation area for $10 you can buy a book of
10 tickets good for 10 nights at most units of the State Park
System. That's a bargain if you use only half the tickets.
The book tickets are good for any type of camping~-trailer, developed, or primitive---on a first-come, first-served
basis for most non-desert parks from October 1 through the
end of February and for desert parks from June 1 through
September 30. The desert parks are Anza Borrego Desert
and Saddleback Eutte State Parks, and Salton Sea, Picacho
and Providence Mountains State Recreation Areas,
Parks not included in the off-season bargain are Doheny,
San Clementi, San Elijo, and South Carlsbad State Beaches in
Southern California (they fill up year round) and Sugar Pine
Point State Park in El Dorado County, which has been winterized for cold-weather camping. Also not included are those
campgrounds operated by a concessioner or by some public
agency other than the state. You may buy your $10 off-season ticket book at any state park, beach, or recreation area
that offers camping, or you may send a £10 check or money
order to the Department of Parks and Recreation, P.O, Box

SACRAMENTO--Farks and Recreation Director William
Penn Mott, Jr. today announced publication of proposed Resource
Management and General Development Plans for Doheny and San
Onofre State Beaches, midway between Los Angeles and San
Diego.
Doheny State Beach, a 62-acre unit of the State Park
System since 1931, is used to capacity for camping and picnicking during most of the summer and is well attended during
the rest of the year. The more than 200 proposed new campsites would all have complete utility hookups to conform to
the State Board of Public Health standards for trailers or
camping vehicles. However, many of them could also be used
for tent camping. Cther new facilities would include a permanent
interpretive center.
San Onofre State Beach, part of the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base, has been obtained by the State from the Marine Corps on a 50-year lease. The beach was first opened for
public use in the spring of 1971. Although recreation demand
in the area is high, use of the beach has been limited so far
by its minimal development.
Facilities at the three separate areas at San Onofre ultimately would include about 1,000 campsites, both developed
and primitive, a large picnic area, an interpretive center,
hiking trails, bicycle trails, and bike rentals. One section of
the beach is noted for its outstanding surfing.
The management and development plans for the beaches
will be submitted for approval to the State Fark and Recreation
Commission at a public hearing at 10 a.m., October 20 in the
auditorium of the old State Office Building at 217 West First
Street, Los Angeles.
The proposed plans for Doheny and San Onofre State Beaches are available for inspection at any of the district office
of the Department of Parks and Recreation.
District Offices are located at:
District 1: 3431 Fort Avenue, Eureka 95501
