At one time it could be said
that Americans were not a musical people, That could hardly
be said of us now, and no one
would deny today that this country has contributed a great deal
to music for more than a generation.
This is partly due to the development of intelligent musical
interest in out secondary schools
and the consequent spread of
instruction at a high level in our
universities over the past fifty
years,
Baritone William Jones, vocal
soloist andconcert moderator
William Jones
with the Marine Band, is one
whose voice and American
training has taken him to far
climes in a display of our own
cultural contributions, He has
sung in some 26 different countries on four continents before
audiences numbering as high as
80,000 people, Magnificent
press notices followed his performances, perhaps summarized
in the words of the music critic
for the Stuttgart, Germany "Zei
tung” who said of him: “It was
for the beautiful baritone of
William Jones that the many
thousands of listeners remained
in their seats to the last tone,
Here is a voice ofthe first
order,”
As a child Jones showed great
promise, billedasthe “boy with
a voice in a million” and appearing onthe “Telephone Hour"
as wellas many other nationallyknown radio programs, He
toured the country in lead roles
upon -graduation from Stetson

His highly promising career
was interrupted by his entry in
the Armed Forces in 1951, but
his civilian musical career was
resumed in 1954 when he was
engaged as a soloist with the
countrys leading symphony
orchestras, including Washingtin’s National Symphony,
So it was that this young man
witha baritone voice of remarkable quality was well on his
way when Lt.Col Schoepper
offered him an opportunity to
become the first full-time
vocalist and concert moderator
in the entife history of Amererica ‘s oldest and foremost symphonic musical organization,
In August of 1955 Bill Jones
donned the historic uniform of
