Plain.Clothes Police Chief Takes Over Nevada City has a new police chief, but he won't weara uniform for two months and he doesn't have a badge. All ‘of this came out Monday night at a short adjourned meeting of the city council. .Chief Ted Lane, who took the oath of office Friday morning, told the council Monday night that he would not wear a uniform fortwo months until he had time to learn the town. The matter of a badge for the chief is another story, It seems that retiring Chief J. J. Jackson took his badge with him. No one shows up,. the clerk calls the meeting to order and then adjourns it to the following Monday evening, Drive On To Save Theater The Liberal Arts Commission theater fund campaign committee opened headquarters Monday in the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce office at city hall, Retha Downey, campaign secretary, and Violet Howard, Chamber secretary, are in charge of the office which will be open from10a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. H. James Ray, chairman of the theater fund committee of the Liberal Arts Commission, will direct an army of volunteers pledged to collect $85,000 for the purchase and restoration of the century old Nevada City Opera House. James De Martini will head the Nevada City area portion of the drive with Dr, Elbridge Best serving in the same capacity for Grass Valley. Captains are Jacqueline Trueblood, Dawn Trubschenck and Patricia Rose, all members of the cast of Golden Days, produced in the old playhouse late in July. Activity to acquire the theater is a response to many demands for more entertainment similar to the highly successful historical extravaganza produced by Marian Libbey and a local cast of over 100 actors, musicians, dancers and volunteer workers, Robert Paine, president of the Liberal Arts Commission, said his group also hopes to make the theater a cultural center and to furnish a site from which the drama department of the University of California at Davis could operate and produce entertainment forthe county and surrounding areas during the summer. He objected to the use Of holding tanks which were objectional in smell, although they would not add to the pollution situation. Before the supervisors last Friday Cox said he had no objection to a holding tank so long as there were sufficient conditions to control cleanliness and odor. Reeb was unable to go ahead with construction because the building inspector refused to issue a building permit until the sanitary situation was clarified.
