Is weather predicting for the birds?
Some frustrated weather meteorologists may hope it isn't
but fear it is, ‘ ,
: Birds and wild animals have been known to outsmart even
the smartest meteorologists when it came to weather prognostication, according to Tom Beard, Tahoe National Forest fire
“prevention officer. Meteorologists, said Beard, are well aware
that birds and wild animals "do sense things" that barometric
pressure devices and other scientific paraphernalia sometimes
. fail to detect, :
~ Barbara Beard, wife of the TNF officer, is a bird watcher
who often gives her husband advance -weather information
_ gleaned from practical application of her bird watehing hobby.
"That ain't what the birds told my wife," Beard twits weather-wise San Francisco meteorologists. .
"She has a better batting average than the meteorologists,"
_ Sheepishly admitted, Beard, «For instance two days ago the blue jays told Mrs, Beard
that hot weather will remain, and that it would be "red flag"
weather in the forests. The bird watcher relayed the information to the fire control officer.
‘How did she know?
Blue jays normally bathe only in the morning in the bird
bath at the Beards’ Banner Crest, home. Suddenly bathing was
extended to the evening hours. ‘
In bird language, according to Mrs, Beard, this means
that two daily dips are required to keep the birds comfortable
during the continuing warm and dry spell. .
Whether the weathermen listened to the birds is not known,
‘but predictions are for unfavorable fire conditions in the
mountains and TNF has run up the "red flag" warning for deer
hunters and campers.
